About You


The Senior Advisor Student Conduct is a senior role within the Integrity team and is critical to the effective operation of the RMIT student conduct framework. The position is responsible for managing the endtoend administration of student conduct activities managing resources for and providing authoritative advice to stakeholders on the operation of the student conduct framework providing secretarial support to the Student Conduct Board leading continuous improvement across case management practices and supporting cyclical reporting to governance bodies.

The Senior Advisor liaises with key stakeholders students subject matter experts and operational areas to ensure proper consistent and compliant case management of student conduct matters under the framework. Inclusive within case management is the provision of strategic advice drawing upon an expert understanding of requirements under the framework and devising solutions to complex issues drawing upon the guidance support and expertise of relevant internal services and resources.

The Senior Advisor provides secretarial supports to the Student Conduct Board in scheduling and organising hearings preparing papers and minutes outcome notifications providing advice to the Chair and members and liaising with respondent students as well as others assisting the Board.

As part of continuous improvement the role identifies systemic policy or procedural issues and takes action to address these including by way of the university policy development process and facilitate implementation activities with stakeholders thereafter. As part of reporting responsibilities the Senior Advisor collates data and drafts relevant commentary for inclusion within various reports for submission to governance bodies on a cyclical basis.

In crossskilling and providing exposure to the Student Conduct Appeals function the Senior Advisor assists the Student Conduct Appeals and University Appeals teams with secretarial support where and workload permitting. The Senior Advisor may also be required to assist the Assessment Support team during peak workload periods.

Restrictions on annual leave may be necessary during peak periods.

To be successful in this position youll have as a minimum:

  • Substantial experience in interpreting applying and advising on policy legislative and regulatory frameworks as well as knowledge of the same preferably within the Higher Education or Vocational Education sectors.

  • Highly developed diagnostic analytical and conceptual skills including excellent attention to detail and an ability to think laterally as well as creatively to identify and implement practical solutions to problems as well as exercise sound judgement in decision making.

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills including the ability to apply cultural understanding and sensitivity and convey complex information ideas and concepts clearly and effectively for consideration by a variety of different audiences.

  • Excellent written communication skills including experience in preparing reports proposals memoranda of advice formal correspondence and complex analyses in a concise manner for consideration by a range of audiences including decision making bodies.

  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective and productive relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders and demonstrated ability to effectively consult collaborate negotiate and influence others.

  • Exceptional organisational and time management skills with a proven ability to demonstrate initiative plan and deliver within tight timeframes manage competing priorities and work autonomously.

  • Proven understanding of and commitment to service excellence as well as the ability to identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities.

  • Substantial Committee or Board management experience including the provision of secretarial support for organisation of meetings preparation of agendas papers and minutes and supporting members.

  • High level proficiency using electronic document and records management systems Microsoft 365 applications and customer (case) relationship management systems such as Salesforce.

About the Portfolio

The Education Portfolio is led by the Deputy ViceChancellor Education and VicePresident who is responsible for planning and implementation of the Universitys strategies related to RMITs academic programs and the student experience. The Portfolio is responsible for services to support the quality of RMIT programs including the professional development of academic staff continuous improvement of the student experience learning and teaching outcomes and the management of learning and research information sources.

The Academic Registrars Group (ARG) is responsible for a range of activities underpinning the student lifecycle from enrolment though to graduation. The ARG operating environment is highly complex in view of more than 82000 student enrolments across the University in both vocational and higher education programs at campuses in Melbourne Europe and Vietnam as well as at several offshore locations in conjunction with educational and industry partners.

RMIT has one of the highest numbers of international student enrolments within Australian universities; consequently compliance requirements are significant with State and Federal legislation imposing numerous and frequently revised regulatory obligations.

The ARG has a staff establishment of around 140 EFT in Australia and Vietnam and an operating budget in excess of $20 million.

The core University functions performed by the Academic Registrars Group include: Integrity: academic policy student conduct university appeals assessment support including special consideration results and academic progress; Academic Governance and Systems: government reporting systems operations academic and admissions governance; invigilated assessment; Enrolment and Student Records: student financials enrolment services student records enrolment compliance and global enrolment services; Completions and Graduations: program completions and graduation ceremonies; Office of the Acdemic Registrar: student complaints complex student matters including external review strategic projects and initiatives and group operations.
