Position Summary
Crude Oil Trading is part of Global Feedstocks Value Chain (GFVC) a crossfunctional organization that purchases/sells plans transports and accounts for crude oil and other refinery feedstocks. Crude Oil Trading has personnel located in the United States Canada Singapore and the UK.
Crude Oil Traders interface externally to negotiate pricing and terms for the purchase and sale of Crude Oil as dictated by refinery economics market conditions and logistics to maximize economic margin consistent with safe refinery supply chain operations and other MPC core values.
This trading position is for a highly motivated individual that has a strong aptitude and a keen interest for a commercial career. This role will provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to gain an understanding of the crude oil supply business while performing a complex and critical function.
Key Responsibilities
Develops and implements negotiating tactics to complement planned sales/supply strategies and to increase the efficiency of such activities.
Continuously reviews market conditions and the shortterm supply and sales plans; recommends and implements changes to the plan to optimize overall value to MPC (product yield shifts sales channel shifts import/export changes etc..
Evaluates and executes discretionary trade and business development opportunities beyond the core business (storage blending freight deals.Initiates and completes negotiations and executes or recommends of deals (purchase exchange and sale contracts) that maximize economic benefits to the company.
Builds and maintains internal and external relationships with counterparties and business partners.
Prepares periodic reports on market activities and supply/demand or competitive developments.
Collaborates with the value chain and various members of the extended business team (Credit Legal Accounting etc. to stay abreast of trading logistical and financial activity meet regulatory requirements prepare contracts address information queries and develop acquisition/sales strategies to achieve optimum value.
Participates in the negotiation or development of commercial resolutions impacting trading desk (e.g. disputes claims etc..
Analyzes and anticipates market conditions to optimize economic value added from purchases sales and exchanges in the shortterm.
Manages basis commodity exposure and/or physical inventory position to maximize market structure value within operational constraints in collaboration with Refining Scheduling and Finance groups within assigned area.
Optimizes transportation and storage asset utilization while managing costs and maximizing economic benefit in collaboration with key stakeholders with a focus on short term.
This dynamic trading role will support MPCs Global book that encompasses foreign and domestic US crude exports and supply the US refining system.
Education and Experience
Trader
Bachelors degree in business finance marketing economics accounting or related field of study
Three 3 or more years of experience in Trading or Marketing including profit/loss responsibility for Product Trading Contract Negotiation and Scheduling (rail truck vessel and pipe).
Senior Trader
Bachelors degree in business finance marketing economics accounting or related field of study
5 or more years of experience in a commercial role trading or marketing including profit/loss responsibility for crude trading contract negotiation and scheduling (rail truck and pipe)
