About the Opportunity

Summary

The School of Architecture in the College of Arts Media and Design at Northeastern University seeks applications for theDesign Research and Teaching Fellowship a twoyear visiting appointment that provides emerging scholars practitioners and advocates of the built environment with the opportunity to develop a body of design research based on a specific area of interest while contributing to the vibrant intellectual culture of the school. The position is a nontenure track appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor and is scheduled to commence in August 2025.

The fellowship supports teaching related to the candidates area of interest as well as modest resources for the development of independent research and creative work. Fellows will have the opportunity to design new curricula for studio and seminar courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels as well as to teach within the School of Architectures core curriculum. They will be provided with opportunities to share their ongoing fellowship work with the wider Northeastern community through lectures presentations and exhibitions throughout the academic year. In particular fellows are invited to engage and collaborate with the faculty body within the School of Architecture across the College of Arts Media and Design and with other colleges and centers across the University. Candidates from a variety of backgrounds training and perspectives are encouraged to apply for this position.

Position Responsibilities

The teaching responsibilities of the fellowship include four courses taught during the 202526 academic year including three design studios and one seminar and the same for the 202627 academic year. At least one of the courses will take the form of a researchcentric design studio that builds directly on the Fellows research project to draw connections between their teaching research and creative practice. Other courses include design studios research seminars or representation courses within the School of Architectures core curriculum where the Fellows unique perspective on the built environment will contribute towards the existing strengths of the department on areas such as sustainable design urban ecologies collective housing public health and material experimentation.

As the culmination of the fellowship years the Fellow will be invited to deliver a lecture as part of the School of Architectures public lecture series and/or to prepare an exhibition or other event that showcases the research teaching and/or creative work that they conducted while in residence at the school.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a terminal degree (PhD Masters or equivalent) in their proposed area of research by the appointment start date. Applicants with prior studio teaching experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • A 12page proposal for a twoyearlong design research project that will be developed as part of the fellowship. The proposal must include a description of how this project can be explored through a research studio curriculum.

Pay Range:

Visiting Assistant Professor: $63000 $70000

With the pay range(s) shown above the starting salary will depend on several factors which may include your education experience location knowledge and expertise and skills as well as a pay comparison to similarlysituated employees already in the role. Salary ranges are reviewed regularly and are subject to change.
