DTs Public Safety Division is looking for a Communications Systems Technician to join the team that will maintain and support the Citys Public Safety and Public Service Communication Systems.
The Communications Systems Technician will be performing skilled technical work including but not limited to the installation calibration maintenance testing troubleshooting repair and modification of electronic equipment and related 911 Radio control system components municipal broadband and WiFi delivery.
Under supervision from a Senior Communications System Technician will be responsible for leading LAN/WAN design implementation and maintenance of critical Public Safety network infrastructure.
Overall the duties and responsibilities of a Communications Systems Technician require journey level electronics technician experience with a broad range of electronic communications systems and understanding of how to deliver wireless services. Ability to lead teams work independently on occasion and have excellent communication skills for public safety personnel.
Position Responsibilities
1. Troubleshoots and repairs wireless equipment such as microwave radios and wireless access points and installs and replaces wireless equipment and/or repair of antennas and server racks at affordable housing locations; repairs and performs operational checks on affordable housing broadband equipment such as network switches surveillance cameras wireless access points microwave radios and intrusion alarms power supplies by using specialized testing equipment such as wireless spectrum analyzers cable verifiers digital oscilloscopes radio service monitors digital multimeters and power meters.
2. Configures wireless equipment such as microwave radios and WiFi access points through use of radio system software and LAN/WAN software.
3. Documents system and equipment repairs modifications and changes as part of ongoing service and maintenance system operating procedures.
4. Respond to and troubleshoot broadband and WiFi problems. Be able to develop and implement solutions to prevent these problems from recurring.
5. LAN/WAN topology designs and followup testing of WiFi and broadband in hallways residential units outdoors recreations centers and other public spaces.
6. Installation modification or removal of radio base stations and wireless backhauls at various radio sites (e.g. Twin Peaks Radio Site DT Radio Shop).
7. Communicate with appropriate vendors property managers housing IT directors and residents/endusers. Consults with public safety personnel service providers and vendors other radio staff cable splicers or other technical staff as needed in resolving communication system problems.
8. Operates a motor vehicle while transporting a variety of items which include broadband and WiFi equipment and radio communication components such as microwaves and antenna masts.
Qualifications :
Experience: Three years of journey level electronics technician experience which must have included the installation repair and maintenance of a broad range of electronic communications systems and equipment.
Certificate: Possession of a Federal Communications Commission GeneralClass RadioTelephone Operators License OR an APCO Certificate of Competency (Associated Public Safety Communications Officers) OR a NABER Certificate (National Association of Business and Educational Radio)
Substitution: Two additional years of experience; OR two years of coursework in electronic communications technology from an accredited college or university (one year experience 30 semester/45 quarter units); OR 1200 hours of professional certificated technical training in that field; OR any combination of the above may substitute for licensing/certificate requirements.
License: Possession of a valid drivers license
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: exposure to disagreeable weather conditions working in confined spaces lifting of heavy objects and carrying them or moving them for moderate distances.

Temporary Provisional (TPV) This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service examination for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three 3 years.
Work Location
Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the Department of Technology Field Office 200 Paul Ave. San Francisco CA 94124. However there will be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.
Nature of Work
Incumbent must be willing to work 40 hours a week in the office or field Monday Friday. Travel within San Francisco will be required.
Compensation: $63.4375 $77.1250 (hourly)/$131950 $160420 (annually)
