Job Title: Senior Organizing Capacity Training Coordinator

Grade: MGT E1

Annual Pay : $118125.63

Location: ALL USA / Hybrid

Purpose: The Organizing Capacity Coordinator is responsible for the development and coordination of trainings training programs and other learning opportunities designed to enhance organizing campaigner and leadership skills of union organizers within the SEIU IU organizing community and our affiliated local unions.

The Organizing Capacity Coordinator must be able to assess the development of organizers at all levels from OIT to Coordinator level and identify their needs and opportunities to grow and advance to the next level of development and responsibility. The Organizing

Capacity Coordinator must be able to design conduct and facilitate trainings and learning opportunities in both classroom online and other settings.

Primary Responsibilities: The Organizing Capacity Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Developing training programs to address building skills and competencies for a particular audience or level within the SEIU organizing community;
  • Executing trainings and other developmental opportunities or learning spaces for varying levels of union organizers that align with new (external) organizing campaign goals and strategies and SEIUs overall goals;
  • Creating and writing relevant and effective training materials including curricula hand outs PowerPoint or Canva presentations and interactive exercises;
  • Learning and utilizing creative training techniques and approaches to teach concepts skills and best practices of union organizing and staff development;
  • Adapting teaching strategies according to the training audience and applying the best approaches to maximize the learning opportunities of trainees including utilizing a racial justice lens;
  • Work in collaboration with others to apply diversity equity and inclusion principles and best practices particularly applying a racial justice lens to the work;
  • Work in coordination with IU Divisions Departments and/or Local Union leadership to evaluate development needs and develop and implement or assist in the development and planning of trainings and other staff development components;
  • Provides leadership in upholding SEIUs overall staff development and organizing standards;
  • Facilitating and providing feedback in large and small group training discussions exercises and practice labs to support trainees development and enhance their understanding of and ability to utilize training information and materials in the classroom and field;
  • Conducting new hire trainings and orientations to acquaint new organizing staff to the SEIU and its policies and procedures
  • Assisting in the recruitment screening and assessment of organizer candidates; conducting phone and inperson interviews; facilitating group candidate screenings; and assisting with hiring recommendations to SEIU locals and IU Divisions;
  • Assisting in oversight of SEIU OrganizersinTraining (OITs) and coordinating with appropriate field/campaign managers to ensure each OIT is receiving appropriate training and feedback and reviews are completed in accordance with relevant SEIU CBA;
  • Working closely with the Capacity operations team to ensure training logistical requirements and needs are successfully executed and met;
  • Additional responsibilities as may be required including but not limited to: Maintaining and updating training materials in training database; maintaining and monitoring a training budget; researching conferences and external training events that would benefit individuals or group staff development.

Direction and Decision Making: The Organizing Capacity Coordinator is a member of the staff development team of the SEIU Capacity Program (within the SEIU National Organizing Dept) and reports directly to the Capacity Program Director.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum seven 7 years of new (external) labor organizing experience; or a combination of a minimum of five 5 years external labor organizing and two 2 years of internal (member) organizing or relevant issuebased community organizing;
  • Minimum of three 3 years of campaign planning and management experience including developing and managing multicomponent campaigns; working with interdisciplinary campaign teams;
  • Three 3 years of experience in developing curriculum and training and demonstrated experience with adult education or training.
  • Bilingual fluency in English/Spanish is preferred
Specialized Knowledge and Skills Needed:
  • Extensive experience in developing and executing union recognition campaigns preferred union contract and/or community organizing issue campaigns (if you have no experience in community organizing or union organizing your application will not be considered);
  • Extensive experience in developing training curricula that is learnercentered participatory and incorporates popular education approaches;
  • Demonstrated commitment to progressive social economic and racial justice
  • Demonstrated experience with applying best practices and principles related to Diversity Equity and InclusionI and applying a racial justice lens to the work;
  • Demonstrated experience in designing writing coordinating and facilitating classroom and fieldbased trainings;
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to exercise good judgment working independently in complex political situations;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent listening skills;
  • Proven ability to develop and manage effective organizing teams and to incorporate effective staff development best practices tools and techniques in their work managing teams;
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to work with a diversity of people;
  • Ability to understand and analyze organizational campaign training and staff development needs to effectively align with training curricula materials and practice exercises;
  • Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Word Power Point Canva Zoom and/or other computer software in order to produce effective training materials;
  • Ability to handle multiple priority projects and meet established timelines;
  • A selfstarter with proven ability to work independently with support to conceptualize design execute assess and refine capacitybuilding programs and learning spaces;
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment;
  • Has a valid Drivers license and the ability and willingness to travel by airplane;
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work long and extended The job involves regular travel away from home for days at a time.

Physical Requirements: Work is generally performed in an office or training/conference room setting but may be required to work in other settings conducive to performing the tasks required to complete assignments. May include worksite visits rallies strikes or other union activity. Extended hours are sometimes required as well as regular travel.
