This is a 16week position with a flexible start date which may begin no earlier than May 5 2025 and no later than September 2 2025. The start date is flexible to accommodate variability in postsecondary GIS program schedules; the exact start date will be determined during the interview process.

Please note that this position has the option to be 100 remote however the incumbent must reside in Ontario and must arrange to attend an inperson orientation and computer equipment pickup for 1 day in Owen Sound at the start of the term.

Purpose

The GIS student performs GIS tasks to support the Countys GIS program including preparing web and printbased cartographic products spatial analyses documentation and data collection and maintenance. They may support other GIS users with data collection or application support and training.

Responsibilities

GIS Mapping & Analysis

  • Creates web and printbased cartographic output upon instruction from senior GIS staff.
  • Adheres to mapping standards for cartographic design including 2D3D maps figures charts and presentation posters data models formats and templates for the County.
  • Analyzes and summarizes spatial data.
  • Occasionally gathers data from third parties municipal partners or consultants for use in GIS projects.
  • May develop web applications in the ArcGIS Online / ArcGIS Portal framework to support data display or collection.
  • Provide thematic maps spatial data analysis and presentation materials for County departments local Municipalities and external agencies as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Occasionally may be required to be in the field to collect data and information as necessary.
  • Compile data for statistics to incorporate into documents and reports.
  • Determine ways to automate repetitive processes whether through Python scripting Model Builder or other tools.
  • May choose best GIS tools to support projects in terms of map formats web applications or Esri field apps.

Field Data Support

  • Configures and deploys templated fielddata collection apps in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise to support field data collection activities.
  • Occasionally undertakes or assists with field data collection.
  • Provides support on the use of Esri field apps to frontline staff.

Other Duties

  • Responsible as an employee for occupational health and safety practices.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
  • Track and maintain records of work completed.

Working Conditions

Usual hours of work are thirtyfive 35 per week Monday to Friday. Overtime can be expected to deal with normal operational and statutory deadlines and peak periods.

Knowledge and Skill

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Effective communication through cartographic design.
  • Job requires sound technical knowledge of GIS and its application including Esri based products (e.g. ArcGIS Pro) and imagery software for map creation and data analysis.
  • Ability to absorb and retain information quickly with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Esri databases (enterprise databases filebased geodatabases)
  • Job requires an introductory knowledge of applied geography projections coordinate systems datums surveying principles primary and secondary data satellite imagery remote sensing aerial photographs image georeferencing cartographic principles documentation of applications metadata digital elevation models data quality and error propagation in raster and vector spatial data
  • Job requires comprehensive knowledge of Windows based software; Word Excel Power Point email (Outlook).
  • Work is reviewed by supervisor for soundness of approach and technical decisions. Job requires referring problems in conflicts in data management requirements to project leader supervisor or manager.
  • Job requires analytical and evaluative skills to develop and deliver user instruction for customized geospatial software use.
  • Human relations communication facilitation and presentation skills in order to relate effectively with and form consultative relationships with clients.
  • Communication skills to demonstrate new features functions and benefits of software changes to users; demonstrate various applications data and system capabilities to staff; and verbally exchange technical information with staff. Capacity to think critically and solve technical problems individually and in a group setting.
  • Business or vocational knowledge gained through Community College or University education specializing in GIS.

Consequences of errors may include: loss or of data and/or in staff productivity. Work is reviewed by supervisor or senior staff to minimize errors.
