Job Description

The English Department is a large department in the College currently employing five teachers. The Department enjoys a modern suite of classrooms with smartboard projection facilities and a workroom with computers available for staff use.

The courses offered by the Department consist of:

A level English Literature (Pearson)

A level English Language (AQA)

A level English Language and Literature (Pearson)

GCSE English Language (AQA)

Creative Writing

Approximately 200 students are currently studying level 3 English courses and there are around 150 students taking GCSE. The Department has an excellent record of student achievement and staff work closely together in the development of teaching materials and course planning. All classes are taught by a single teacher. Teachers for all courses work within supportive teams for the exchange of ideas resources and teaching strategies.

The courses are well resourced and take place in dedicated teaching rooms. There is easy access to IT facilities for students who are encouraged to develop all aspects of relevant IT skills within their course. Staff/student relations are informal positive and marked by high expectations of all students.

The Department also offers a range of enrichment opportunities for students including creative writing and support for Oxbridge applications. There are regular theatre visits and guest speakers and students are encouraged to participate in national competitions for playwriting and poetry.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal person for this role embodies the principles of progression and inclusion for all students. We are seeking an individual who is passionate about their teaching and using their innovative teaching methods to encourage our students to meet their own potential. You will be someone who can demonstrate a broad range of delivery of this particular subject and who has flexibility around their expectations of the role. You will need to balance your skills against the needs of the students. JOB DESCRIPTION

Teaching Duties

The person appointed will teach a timetable that may include a range of courses from the Departmental provision. Wherever possible there will be flexibility over the subjects and aspects to be taught taking into account personal experience skills and preferences. There may also be opportunities to teach across departments although this naturally cannot be guaranteed.

Personal Tutor Responsibilities

The Personal Tutor has two primary responsibilities: to support and to inform.

To support:

The Personal Tutor plays a vital role in motivating monitoring supporting and guiding students academic progress through the College through regular onetoone consultations. Daily and weekly attendance reports a collegewide electronic mark book and the student profiling cycle all provide valuable information about individual progress and enable tutors to identify problems at an early stage. It is the responsibility of the tutor in the first instance to act upon this information as appropriate. This may mean for example offering advice liaising with other subject staff or organizing additional subject support.

Some students will experience personal difficulties during their time at College and these may well be brought to the Personal Tutor especially if academic progress is being hindered.

To inform:

It is the responsibility of the Personal Tutor to ensure tutees are aware of College policies and procedures.

Qualifications

a good relevant degree

a current recognized teaching qualification

Experience

recent teaching experience is desirable but applications from newly qualified teachers will be equally welcome

Knowledge

a good working knowledge of recent curriculum developments at post16

the ability to teach to Advanced level

Skills

excellent teaching skills

good organizational and time management skills.
