Job Description

POSITION: Journalism fellow

POSITION TYPE: Temporary parttime contract ASAP January 17 2025

LOCATION: Remote in Canada must be legally eligible to work in Canada. Nova Scotia New Brunswick Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador residents preferred.

SALARY: $25.25/hr minimum 15 hours per week

The job

Kukukwes News is partnering with Journalists for Human Rights to offer a fellowship position for reporters who identify as members of a First Nations Mtis and/or Inuit community Black and/or other racialized community. This is an exciting opportunity for a BIPOC youth to gain valuable experience as a multimedia journalist. Kukukwes News is the only independentlyowned news website that exclusively covers Indigenous news in Atlantic Canada.

The successful candidates will be responsible for:

  • Researching pitching and covering original news stories
  • Covering assigned news stories
  • Producing digital journalistic content (written content photos and video)
  • Editing material for use on digital platforms (website social media)
  • On occasion editing stories written by colleagues.


The fellows will report directly to Maureen Googoo owner/editor of Kukukwes News and will benefit from her mentorship and guidance as a veteran journalist and entrepreneur.
