The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University invites applications for a fulltime nontenured teaching and professional faculty track position of Professor of Practice of Scenic Design at the assistant associate or full appointment depending upon qualifications.
The successful candidate will teach in the Schools MFA in Entertainment Design Program and advise students on projects and productions. This position is a partner in a collaborative active forwardfocused professional training program on the graduate level. Applicants must possess a strong background in stage and scenic design a knowledge of contemporary training and techniques for the 21st century designer a willingness to work with a collaborative spirit among a team of six design faculty members with diverse approaches and a proven ability to teach advanced design courses.
This is a Professional and Teaching faculty position. While it is not eligible for tenure it has a threetier promotion path and opportunity for longterm (fiveyear) contracts which may at the top rank (Professor of Practice) be renewed annually contingent on job performance. Professional and Teaching facultys primary responsibility is teaching though courses may be substituted by significant service roles. Additional service will be negotiated based on teaching load and departmental needs. Creative work and research are not expected though they may be rewarded.
This position requires being physically located on the SMU campus in Dallas throughout the academic year. The position begins academic year 202526 with a commitment of nine months per year.
Minimum Qualifications:
An MFA relevant terminal degree or significant professional experience is
required. Candidates without a terminal degree are encouraged to apply if they
have equivalent professional and demonstrated teaching experience that
prepares them for the responsibilities of a graduate training program.
USA 829 membership preferred
Ongoing professional career with a national presence
Portfolio exhibiting scenic design in theatre dance and/or opera
Command of various digital skills including Vectorworks
Familiarity with the history of architecture and associated decorative styles.
