Job Description

Salary Range: $35.90$45.20/hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Communicates basic instructions to patients in English and / or Navajo.
  • Redirects patient inquires concerns and maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains phlebotomy skills by obtaining venous and capillary blood samples based on age sample requirements and difficulty of collection. Must be able to perform phlebotomy and guide lab or other medical staff when directed.
  • Determines the suitability of specimen in regards to correct patient information sample requirements and performs correct preparation of specimen handling testing or storage for transporting to outside testing laboratories to include preparing cytology surgical specimens.
  • Communicates any discrepancies or questionable situations to the department supervisors and request a new specimen if determined to be unsuitable.
  • Maintains high degree of working knowledge in all departments by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies. Departments include transfusion services chemistry immunology serology therapeutic drug monitoring toxicology microbiology hematology coagulation and urinalysis.
  • Performs specialty studies as outlined in Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments/College of American Pathologist (CLIA/CAP) regulations for each department in which they assist. Studies include statistical analysis and interpretation of data in relation to analytical operations of testing methodology comparative evaluation of new and or modified assays as well as studies related to new QC lots Instrument Correlations Analytical Measurement Ranges etc.
  • Performs quality control on analyzers and interprets QC data in regards to WestGard Rules performs instrument calibration and interprets acceptance criteria. Advises in the corrective action needed when QC or Calibrations fails to meet regulatory guidelines.
  • Ensures operation of analyzers in all department disciplines by following manufacturers troubleshooting instructions; recognizes and react too indicators of malfunction and performs minor corrections. Notifies technical service repair and department supervisor when identifying the major issue.
  • Attends Instrument Manufactures advanced training courses. Maintains key operator skills in performing Daily Weekly Monthly and annual maintenance. Performs appropriate pipetting techniques in preparing dilutions reconstituting QC Calibrations and linearity samples.
  • Maintains accurate inventory records and supply levels by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies. Conserves laboratory resources by using supplies as needed to accomplish job tasks efficiently.
  • Establishes and maintains a working liaison with the Nursing and Medical Staff regarding the processing of specimens evaluation and interpretation of results. Provides verbal consults in various aspects of the clinical laboratory.
  • Participates in the Laboratory CAP Proficiency Program and maintains the required testing competency level. Monitors incoming CAP Surveys in all departments to ensure they are completed by prescribed due dates.
  • Performs as a shift floor controller to ensure overall operation surveillance accuracy correctness and efficiency of the Laboratory. Ensures daily department logs are completed and corrective action properly documented performs a direct handoff to the next shift and prints monthly QC reports. Ensures a safe and clean working environment by complying with Safety Infection Control and hazardous waste procedures rules and regulations established by TMC Hospital and Laboratory
  • Participates in the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program by formally reporting Concerns or Errors as outlined in Laboratory Quality Assurance Policies and Procedures. Contributes to the team effort in group discussions and problem solving to improve the overall operation and efficiency of the Laboratory.
  • Assists in the development of technical procedures instructional guides forms and working job aide material for the laboratory and hospital training programs. Provides instructions to laboratory personnel in techniques equipment use testing procedures and laboratory information systems and ensures orientation records and competency assessments are completed and inspection ready at all times.
  • Participates in performing Laboratory CAP Selfinspection by maintaining laboratory documentation knowledge and skill levels in relation to approved Laboratory and Hospital procedures policies and CAP checklists.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MANDATORY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Four 4 years experience in performing high complexity testing in a medical laboratory.

Education: Associates Degree in Chemical Biological or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution which includes

  • 6 Semester hours of Chemistry
  • 6 Semester hours of Biology
  • 12 Semester hours of Chemistry biology or Medical Laboratory technology in any combination.

*Must provide a copy of diploma and transcript upon hire to meet CLIA88 Standard 493.1489 qualification for High Complexity testing personnel

*Education institute must be approved or accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) the Commission on Allied Health Education Accreditation (CAHEA) or other organization approved by HHS.

*Candidates must be eligible for the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical lab scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCPBOR) the National Credentialing Agency (NCA) American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).
