CITY OF ALBANY HABITAT RESTORATION INTERNSHIP


The Wildfire Resilience Program

The California State Coastal Conservancys Wildfire Resilience Program supports local partners to develop and implement projects that improve forest health and reduce the risk of catastrophic fire in areas where people are living near wildlands.

Through this threeyear grant the Public Works Department is establishing a Habitat Restoration Intern Program to increase our understanding of plant and animal communities on Albany Hill. The data collected will help in our development of more fire resilient and healthy ecosystems.

Albany Hill is located on the west end of the City of Albany near the shoreline of San Francisco Bay and is the most prominent landmark within the City.

The Position

The objective of the City of Albanys internship program is to provide a meaningful training ground for individuals to gain work experience and to increase their ability to compete in the workforce in entrylevel positions.

Under supervision Habitat Restoration Interns will assist participate in and perform functions related to studying and stewarding flora and fauna on Albany Hill as well as educating the public about nature on the hill. Interns will have the option to pursue projects under supervision of the Natural Areas Coordinator related to their interests or specialty.

Examples of Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address city needs and changing city practices.

Identify and survey plants and animals and other organisms on Albany Hill using phone apps such as iNaturalist CalFlora eBird.

Add entries to Field Guide of Native Plants and Animals.

Create educational signage at restoration areas about the importance of native plants to wildlife and people.

Conduct walks school outreach and other educational events for the community about nature on Albany Hill including plants animals traditional ecological knowledge geology or other related topics.

Participate in and/or conduct research of organisms or natural processes or interactions of people with nature on Albany Hill.

Participate in and/or conduct wildlife camera studies.

Prepare written and oral reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Enrolled or already attending college classes in sciences environmental studies/sciences natural resources biology ecology environmental engineering environmental sociology geology geography landscape architecture horticulture or related fields.

Currently have or will have a high school diploma or GED by summer.

Experience: None

Ideal Candidates:

Interest in and curiosity about the natural world.

Desire to acquire new skills and knowledge.

Experience volunteering with community organizations or agencies.

Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather with frequent walking standing and stooping.

Proficient written and oral communications research interpersonal and organizational skills.

Experience using Microsoft Office including Word Outlook and Excel.

Selection Process

Program Schedule and Duration:

Selected Intern will work an average of 1520 hours per week for 34 months between MayAugust. Start and end dates flexible depending on academic schedule and other needs.
