Duties And Responsibilities
COLLEGE FACULTY LOGISTICS : Each faculty member has on average a student load of 2024 individuals consisting of 5 medical students per year (including expanded students dual degree students). The relationship of student with faculty member lasts throughout the students tenure in medical school. Each faculty member will spend one halfday each week teaching College Clinical Tutorials. Much of this instruction will take place in a patient care setting. Each faculty member will spend one additional halfday each week working on College activities either teaching aspects of the Foundations of Clinical Medicine Course; in meetings; in faculty development; or in other College related activities. MENTORING RESPONSIBILITIES : (A) FOUNDATIONS PHASE Introduce yourself to each new student and welcome them to medical school at the start of year; including orientation activities. Meet with your group of 5 students for dinner at least once per semester. Provide support guidance and mentoring to each student in the context of a personal mentoring relationship. This may include oneonone meetings social group gatherings or individual college activities (parties service projects etc). Some of these may occur during evenings or weekends. Assist students with academic issues as they develop. Assist students with clinical issues as they develop. Assist students with professional identify formation and career advising Assist students with scholarship requirements. Attend White Coat Ceremony. (B) DURING CLINICAL TRAINING (Patient Care Phase and Exploration and Focus Phase) Continue to provide a mentoring relationship with your students proactively contacting each student at least quarterly by email phone call or through social gatherings. Review and assist in the progress of each student through the clinical curriculum including: written clerkship performance; performance on Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) or other clinical assessments; review reflections/experiences of students as they proceed through clinical training. Track and monitor the progress of each student through all aspects of clinical skills training which includes an electronic dashboard system. Provide career counseling as requested. Provide residency application advice as requested. Review and edit students personal statements as requested. Write letter of support for residency application as requested. If schedule permits attend Physicians Oath and Hooding Ceremony and annual College Faculty retreat in Seattle. TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES : (A) FOUNDATIONS PHASE Participate in the delivery of the curricular content of the Clinical Immersion block. Teach the Foundations of Clinical Medicine curriculum in College Clinical Tutorial sessions to assigned College students in biweekly bedside (or outpatient clinic) teaching sessions. Develop and expand the students medical interviewing and communication skills. Teach technique and skills of complete medical database acquisition. Teach basic and advanced physical examination. Observe and critique the skills and technique of the comprehensive patient evaluation (history and physical examination) at the bedside during clinical tutorials. Listen to and correct the student oral case presentations during clinical tutorials. Assist in the development of each students clinical reasoning ability including differential and working diagnoses as pertains to each patient encounter. Read and correct/edit student writeups within one week of receipt. Participate in additional teaching sessions of the Foundations of Clinical Medicine curriculum including small group skills development sessions; IPE sessions; simulation sessions; and other teaching activities on regular College tutorial mornings or during College meeting/clinical skills teaching day. Read and comment on students required and optional written reflections and other required or optional assignments. Provide detailed written student feedback for the College Clinical Tutorial component of the Foundations of Clinical Medicine Course at the end of each term. Precept or observe required OSCEs (for students of other College faculty). Remediate students from your own group who have had two or more needs development ratings on OSCE station evaluations. Routinely teach and model professionalism. Routinely teach and model medical ethics. During the Foundations Phase meet with each student individually to provide oneonone verbal feedback each term or more often as needed. (B) DURING CLINICAL TRAINING Patient Care Phase and Exploration and Focus Phase) Review and assist in the progress of each student through the clinical curriculum including: written clerkship performance; performance on OSCEs or other clinical assessments; review reflections/experiences of students as they proceed through clinical training. Track and monitor the progress of each students through all aspects of clinical skills training which includes an electronic dashboard system. GENERAL : Prepare for attend and participate in individual College Faculty meetings. Participate in faculty development sessions and faculty meetings (which occur periodically throughout the year) as appropriate. Prepare for attend and participate in annual College Faculty retreats in Seattle. Provide faculty development at the request of the Regional Dean or the Associate Dean for the Colleges. Be a resource for teaching faculty within the state. Develop collaborative projects with the WWAMI leadership to promote the mission of the Colleges and UWSOM within the WWAMI region.
