Job Description

Eawag the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
The Department of Environmental Chemistry is offering a permanent position for a

Mass Spectrometry Data Engineer 80 (m/f/d)

At the Department of Environmental Chemistry we focus on the occurrence distribution and fate of organic compounds in aquatic environments aiming to develop innovative solutions for a cleaner healthier future. Our research spans a range of compounds from small anthropogenic pollutants to larger biomolecules like proteins and natural toxins. We operate a fleet of 20 highend mass spectrometers for various LC/GC coupled to HRMS and IRMS applications. To remain at the forefront of environmental chemistry we continuously expand our analytical and data processing capabilities.

We are seeking a specialist who supports scientists and technicians in our department and in Eawags Mass Spectrometry Facility with
  • processing evaluating and managing mass spectrometry data from environmental samples
  • developing and maintaining data analysis workflows and lab management tools with inhouse and commercial software
  • collaborating with the institutions business and scientific IT support staff
Successful candidates should have
  • degree (MSc or PhD) in analytical chemistry environmental sciences or equivalent
  • extensive handson experience in mass spectrometry data acquisition for complex samples
  • proficient experience in developing data processing pipelines (e.g. nontarget workflows spectral libraries commercial software etc.
  • programming skills for data processing data management and database development and curation (e.g. R/Shiny Python web user interfaces SQL)
  • knowhow of IT infrastructure and its maintenance (e.g. Docker Git PowerShell Linux) would be a desirable added skill
Candidates need to be fluent in written and spoken English while knowledge in German would be an asset. The position further requires a high level of organization time management teamwork and communication skills.
