Job Description
The Grounds Manager serves as a working supervisor over the Grounds Department at Facilities and Operations. The Grounds Manager is responsible for performing designing and directing the cultivation and care of the landscaping and grounds of university properties. Develops maintains and implements an effective snow removal process. Position oversees Grounds Department the Moves Department and Garage Mechanic position responsible for upkeep/repairs of Grounds equipment and fleet vehicles. Manager Duties: Ensures that the University grounds are attractive and wellkept. Functions as a team leader providing guidance and training to assigned personnel. Daily monitoring of current work order system and routine work duties to ensure all work associated with Grounds and Garage departments are addressed in a timely fashion. Oversees and performs grounds and landscape maintenance and improvements. Purchases and supervises the planting and maintaining of seasonal plants. Reads reviews and develops prints or diagrams on new and existing landscaping projects for construction maintenance and cost estimates. Performs yearly inventory of Grounds equipment. Oversees performance of repairs and maintenance procedures on equipment and vehicles. Develops preventive maintenance and inspection schedules. Operates backhoe farm tractors farm implements mowers trimmers chainsaws dump trucks passenger vehicles snow plows salt spreaders hand tools and other tools and equipment common to landscaping/grounds maintenance. Enforces University and Facilities and Operations rules and policies regarding employee conduct by advising personnel of the Universitys rules and policies on employee conduct issuing verbal warnings and written reprimands for violations and recommending progressive disciplinary action as appropriate. Ensures that administrative records regarding assigned personnel are accurate and current by reviewing time clock entries monitoring employee absences and completing employee evaluations. Develops and submits detailed requisitions for parts materials tools supplies and equipment. Supervises the receiving storage and inventory supplies and replacement parts to maintain stock levels to meet the departments needs. Tracks the usage of the departments state issued purchase card(s). Attends project meetings and interacts with contractors vendors and supervisors as needed. Interfaces with Supervisors Managers employees and requesting party to finalize project needs. Prepares estimates for materials and costs of proposed projects or repairs. Obtains quotes from contractors and vendors for services/repairs beyond scope of inhouse services/repairs. Prepares documents and/or reports (via Microsoft Office Excel or equivalent) for management as necessary or requested to include (but not limited to); monthly State mileage report equipment replacement recommendations tracking of strategic goal accomplishments employee work schedules vehicle maintenance inventories of equipment and supplies landscaping schedules and quantities (spring/fall flowers mulch etc. Routinely serves as Administrator on call. Properly uses instructs the use of stores and disposes of pesticides fertilizers insecticides herbicides and other chemicals and ensures compliance with all federal state and local regulations. Maintains required Public Pesticide Applicator License. Responsible for care and routine inspection of campus trees including making recommendations for needed care. Serves as leader of tree committee and schedules committee meetings on regular frequencies (minimum of twice per year). Ensures that proper safety procedures are followed by employees while performing job duties. Ensures the Garage department is in compliance with all federal state and local regulations in handling storing and use of chemicals. Maintains an organized work area which includes cleanliness safety and security of materials. Coordinates staff and equipment for snow and ice removal leaf removal trash policing storm damage cleanup and other emergencies. Performs event work (loading transportation unloading and setup) and rearrangement of tents tables chairs podiums etc. campuswide (both on and off campus) using a vehicle (pickup flatbed box truck etc) powered industrial truck dolly/hand cart or by physical means.
