Job Description

The Department of History and Geography at Clemson University invites internal applications for the position of Department Chair beginning November 16/December 1 2023.

The successful candidate will lead a department that includes twentyfive historians and two geographers.

The department offers a BA 250 majors) and MA 18 students) in history a PhD in digital history 11 students) and a minor in geography. It also participates in the interdisciplinary major in Global Black Studies.



Candidates should have qualifications sufficient for appointment as a tenured professor of history or geography.We are seeking a senior scholar with a strong record of publication a commitment to teaching excellence and demonstrated administrative experience. The successful candidate for department Chair will manage course scheduling budgeting hiring and evaluation of faculty staff and assessment of programs in addition to maintaining an active program of scholarship and service.

This is normally a 3year renewable appointment beginning on November 16/December 1 2023. The Chair will report to the Dean of the College. Teaching release and financial arrangements to be discussed with the Dean.
