School of Physics and Astronomy / College of Science and Engineering

Full time: 35 hours per week

Fixed term: for 5 years

We are looking for an early career postdoctoral researcher who is ready to develop their own independent research in a supportive environment in collaboration with and under the guidance of the newly appointed Tait Chair of Mathematical Physics Professor Steve Tobias.

The Opportunity:

The Fellowship aims to provide a supportive and collegial environment for an earlycareer researcher to develop their research and submit proposals to secure external research funding (e.g. a 5year Research Fellowship such as a Royal Society University Research Fellowship; an Ernest Rutherford Fellowship; a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship or a European Research Council fellowship) and where appropriate other external research resources such as computer/facility time.

The research should be in an area aligned with the interests of Professor Steve Tobias. In particular the candidate should be interested in developing and utilising theoretical and computational methods (including Machine Learning) for multiscale problems in fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics and have an interest in astrophysical and geophysical fluids.

The post is available either on a fulltime or parttime basis and we are open to considering flexible working patterns.We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a noncontractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular oncampus working.

The post is fixed term for 5 years with a start date ideally 1st October 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary for this post is 49250 to 60321 per annum.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • PhD in Mathematics Physics Astrophysics Geophysics or related subject.
  • Relevant research experience in theoretical and computational astrophysical and geophysical fluid dynamics with a record of highquality leadauthor and coauthored refereed journal publications (relative to career stage).
  • A track record of publication in high quality journals.
  • Ability to lead and/or take responsibility for independent research; developing research objectives projects and proposals for individual and collaborative research.
  • Capable of working independently exercising a high degree of initiative and with the ability to think creatively.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly orally and in writing.
