Position Overview

The Novelis Bay Minette AL team is seeking a Sr. Automation Engineer to work on site. The Engineer in this role will report Engineering Maintenance Reliability & Automation (EMRA) Leader. The ideal candidate will be responsible for systems engineering and providing support in the areas of automation and computer systems to contribute to the achievement of the plants safety quality sustainability and budget objectives. This position will guide and lead the activities of others related to reliability/maintenance Information Technology (IT) Industry 5.0 and keep current with the constantly evolving technology balancing it with the needs of the operations to bring forth improvements in automated systems and methods.

Responsibilities:

  • Solve advanced analysis and identify areas of potential advancements in the processes equipment and facilities to achieve increased profitability through reduced costs increased efficiency improved quality increase production output and optimized equipment uptime.
  • Support the aluminum manufacturing process by working closely with the Operations Engineering Administrative and Process groups.
  • Work closely with the Automation Reliability & Engineering Managers develop conceptual and functional requirements for short and longterm process and equipment development (facility planning) consistent with the business plan.
  • Provide afterhours and weekend support as needed to assist maintenance in the resolution of issues having an immediate impact on plant performance. This can involve providing direction/mentorship remotely and/or onsite.
  • Work with maintenance technicians and engineers as needed to resolve and prevent maintenance and engineering problems and to develop training programs on processes and equipment for the maintenance staff.
  • Apply innovative technology and techniques to resolve complex problems as well as training teams and teams related to Automation Process Control and Rolling applications.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and other technical resources inside and outside of the Site and Company
  • Support the full scope of the automation and controls projects including budget control schedule and compliance with safety environmental and sustainability requirements to assure performance against expectations.
  • Constantly search for innovations and continuous improvement.
  • Anticipate and lead capital projects from conceptual to implementation phases
  • Participate in the development of Level II (process automation) and to support the plant and personnel in a timely manner.
  • Manage communication between plant utilities (power distribution water compressed air etc..
  • Collaborate with the Information Technology department on regular maintenance and upgrade of PCs servers software and other associated equipment.
  • Drive the deployment of digital capabilities via Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning and incorporate industry best processes.
  • Expand the application of data capturing & contextualization to the next level by embracing the latest trends in manufacturing such as digitalization and Industry 5.0.
  • Resolve and implement automation solutions for monitoring of environmental regulations and process and/or system improvements.
  • Interact with internal collaborators to support mentor and needed assistance to meet safety quality reliability and cost goals.
  • Influence regional and/or global decisionmaking by preparing and presenting technical information to senior management on matters with significant business impact such as regional/multisite capital expenditures or regional process/product improvements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Electrical Mechatronics or Automation Engineering.
  • 7 years of professional experience
  • Working experience in the field of factory automation network controls and instrumentation.
  • Experience with design and program logic for PLCs and HMIs (Siemens preferred).
  • Good methodical expertise in equipment problemsolving and related issues.
  • Project management skills
  • Result oriented and great decisionmaking capabilities.
  • Leadership skills to advise lead and develop other personnel to accomplish personal plant and corporate objectives
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills; ability to connect with all levels in the organization
  • Desire to take initiative and develop a proactive relationship with employees through followup understanding their needs and encouraging a collaborative relationship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and working experience with Industry 4.0 or 5.0 technologies.
  • Steel or Aluminum cold rolling process.
  • Proficiency in Historian (ibaPDA systems).
  • Basic understanding of capabilities for controls and servo systems and an understanding of maintenance procedures and principles of equipment reliability.
  • Experience in trouble shooting mechanical systems including pneumatics tooling issues measurement feedback systems and basic design robustness.

Location Profile

Novelis newly announced Bay Minette facility will be located 35 miles northeast of Mobile AL and 45 miles west of Pensacola FL and is expected to create approximately 1000 highpaying advanced careers in modern manufacturing. This highly advanced rolling and recycling facility will be the first of its kind. It will primarily serve our customers in the beverage can and automotive markets.
