About the Work Unit
The Intelligent Transportation Systems Field Operations Unit exists to install operate maintain and repair complex communication and ITS systems for CDOT Statewide. The Intelligent Transportation Systems Office exists to manage CDOTs ITS program to operate the Colorado Traffic Management Center to plan for CDOT ITS activities and support contracts to manage ITS research program. The unit performs preventive routine and emergency maintenance on various types of electronics electromechanical and communications equipment. The unit also performs maintenance and repair on electrical systems associated with ITS. This position will work with both Statewide and Region Traffic and ITS Teams. The Field Operations unit performs preventive routine and emergency maintenance on various types of electronics and communications equipment. The unit performs maintenance on communication systems associated with traffic signals tunnel control systems PLCs and ITS assets across the State while supporting remote hands to the ITS Network and Technology Unit at Data Center and Node Sites across the State.
About the position
This position will be inspecting troubleshooting maintaining and documenting fiberoptic and ITS assets. This position will work closely with other Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) units and Region Teams and will provide support to others in the Region in the installation maintenance and repair of Fiber Broadband Cellular equipment and other communication systems. This position will also perform technical installation troubleshooting and repair of electronic electromechanical systems and communication equipment. This position operates special test equipment and maintains tools and materials needed as a technical expert. This position will maintain and troubleshoot several different assets from intelligent transportation devices to control tunnel systems cameras variable message boards weather systems data collection devices and other intelligent technologies on the highway.
Responsibilities include supporting or completing installation or maintenance actions making modifications to existing equipment and setting up or testing new equipment for installation accordance to ITS Standards and Specs. This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the communication system including all field and network devices. This position requires to be able to efficiently and effectively troubleshooting and configuration of electronics and communication devices as well as fiberoptic assets. This position also requires remote diagnostics using various media and test software.
Your duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:- This position must access and troubleshoot communication power and device specific issues including understanding and testing different pieces of equipment by power cycling or repairing damages;
- This position will work on devices such as weather station sensors cameras variable message boards variable speed limit board sidefire radars automatic traffic records etc. as well as repairing or troubleshooting fiber connections and switches including backbone and lateral paths through pull boxes and manholes.
- Uses remote troubleshooting tools to assist field technician with repair of electronic/electromechanical devices;
- Configures new electronics/electromechanical equipment for deployment into a field environment; field troubleshoots complex electronic failures and uses Tolling/ATM software to monitor equipment status and performance;
- Performs second level testing of failed equipment returned from the field; determines if device is repairable surplus or returned to vendor;
- Provides training to other employees in the area of electronics/electromechanical repair; trains and creates guides on new systems and/or devices deployed into the field; trains new employees on ITS specific devices and/or systems;
- Monitors systems and equipment functionality status;
- Creates and installs new cabling replace old cabling and assists Electronic Engineer with testing of new systems;
- Orders and tracks materials as needed;
- Plans and schedules maintenance tasks taking into account personnel expertise and availability vehicle size restrictions and site access restrictions;
- Coordinates and schedules traffic control activities with CDOT region primes and maintenance patrols and contract companies ensuring proper internal notification procedures are followed;
- Other job duties as assigned.
- Your schedule will primarily be 6:00 am 4:30 pm MondayThursday.
- Oncall for emergencies
- May be required to travel out of town to repair ITS devices or systems.

Conditions of Employment
- Must obtain a current valid Colorado Commercial Drivers License Type A or B with air brakes within 6 months of hire.
