Bellingham Technical College is establishing a pool of adjunct instructors for theacademic year to plan and teach courses in degree and certificate program areas such as:

  • Advanced Manufacturing (Industrial Maintenance & Mechatronics Instrumentation & Control; Machining; Process Technology Welding)
  • Bachelor of Applied Science courses
  • Business & Computer Technology (Accounting Administrative Assistant Associate in Business DTA/MRP Computer Networking Health Information Technology Legal Administrative Assistant Medical Coding & Billing Medical Reception Office Assistant Project Management Receptionist)
  • Culinary Arts/Pastry
  • Engineering (Civil Composites Electronics Geomatic Technology Manufacturing Engineering Mechanical Design)
  • Fisheries & Aquaculture Sciences
  • Heath & Nursing Sciences (Dental Assisting Dental Hygiene EMT Nursing Radiology Technology Surgery Technology Veterinary Technology)
  • Industrial Technology (Electrician HVAC & Refrigeration Residential Home Inspection)

Adjunct positions are parttime and quarterly. Employment is contingent upon adequate enrollment. Class load is generally between one and three classes each quarter (fall winter spring) and contingent on need.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of the Deans Directors and/or program leads adjunct faculty will engage in a variety of learning support activities to:

  • Prepare and teach courses during the times and dates specified by the academic schedule;
  • Design develop and assess curriculum;
  • Provide a course syllabus for each class every quarter;
  • Provide timely and accurate assessment feedback to students;
  • Plan supervise and evaluate students progress;
  • Maintain related student records evaluations and progress reports;
  • Consult with other college faculty and staff on issues relevant to students success and retention;
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of institutional effectiveness and learning outcome measures related to courses;
  • Follow disciplinary procedures as prescribed and deal consistently and fairly with all students;
  • Adapt to changing teaching schedules and situations (on campus online hybrid etc. as required by program;
  • Effectively use computer applications where appropriate including learning management systems;
  • Incorporate pedagogies that support best learning practices;
  • Work with students faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds and experiences;
  • Demonstrate respect for others;
  • Other related duties as assigned and required.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualification:

  • Generally a Masters degree in subject area is required. For some disciplines alternate credentials may be accepted. Areas listed in supplemental with an * require a Masters degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two years teaching at the postsecondary level;
  • Experience with course design;
  • Experience with online and/or hybrid instruction;
  • Experience or interest in the development of new STEM curriculum;
  • Experience or interest in working closely with instructors from various technical fields to contextualize instruction.
Condition of Employment: Sexual Misconduct Declaration:Washington State law (RCW 28B.112.080 and Bellingham Technical College (BTC) policies and procedures prohibit BTC from hiring selected applicants* who do not complete and sign a sexual misconduct declaration prior to their start of employment. *Applicant is defined as those applying for employment as faculty instructor staff advisor counselor and any position in which the applicant will likely have direct ongoing contact with students in a supervisory role or position of authority.

Beginning on October 1 2020 prior to final official offer of employment BTC is required to ask applicants who are not already a BTC employee to sign a statement disclosing whether the applicant:
  • Is the subject of any substantiated findings of sexual misconduct in any current or former employment
  • Is currently being investigated for sexual misconduct at any current employer
  • Has left a position during an investigation into a violation of any sexual misconduct policy at any current or past employers
For any positive response the applicant is required to provide an explanation of the situation. Failure to provide complete and accurate information will result in disqualification from employment and withdrawal of any offer of employment.

The sexual misconduct declaration authorizes the applicants current and past employers to disclose to BTC any sexual misconduct committed by the applicant and make available to BTC copies of all documents in the previous employers personnel investigative or other files relating to sexual misconduct including sexual harassment by the applicant. The declaration releases the applicants current and past employers and employees acting on behalf of that employer from any liability for providing the information in the sexual misconduct declaration. The hire will not be finalized until the completed and signed declaration is received.

Supplemental Information

Salary Statement:
Adjunct salaries will be determined according to the current negotiated salary schedules. Effective July 1 2023 A 5 credit 55 hour) per course compensation range is $3703 to $4611.20 depending on type of course. Courses range from 38 credits.

The following benefits are in accordance with the Bellingham Education Association (BEA) and subject to change with each negotiated contact. Current BEA contract expires June 30 2025. Benefits include paid sick leave. Sick leave is accrued based on their contracted FTEF multiplied by 7.5 hour for each month in active teaching status. In addition if eligible a 5 per hour more above the teaching rate doctoral stipend if teaching a five credit or more course (not paid on contract training community or continuing ed courses); In addition a 5 Longevity premium rate after teaching 1375 hours at BTC. Other benefits include Employee Assistance Program (EAP) a free counseling & referral program; potential flexible and/or remote schedules. No additional benefits.

However adjunct faculty may be eligible for insurance benefits if they are employed at one or more Washington state public institutions of higher education for a combined total of at least 50 percent or more of a fulltime workload* on a quartertoquarter or semester basis and for at least two consecutive quarters. Spring and summer are considered consecutive quarters when first establishing eligibility. *Workload as defined by respective collective bargaining agreements and/or the appointing institution.
