CLASSE holds no higher priority than ensuring the health and safety of all personnel collaborators and facility visitors. These values are woven into the fabric of laboratory administration and operation. A strong relationship with Cornell University EHS provides important policy guidance institutional support and oversight. CLASSE faces unique challenges in addressing the sometimesdisparate needs of faculty staff students collaborators and visitors a diverse community.

The CLASSE approach to safety is built around three overlapping commitments to:

  • Continuously provide a safe laboratory environment

  • Engender an abiding culture of safety in all personnel

  • Address and anticipate safety challenges with proactive safety management

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Safety Lead (SL) and Safety Associate (SA) together implementEHSs safety directives to fulfill the above commitments in coordination with the CLASSE Director. The university strives to empower all personnel to advocate for their own safety as well as that of their coworkers. The SA achieves program goals by:

  • Administering the CLASSE Safety Program under supervision of & in collaboration with the SL and EHS.

  • Coordinate safety program duties under direction from the SL in a manner that accounts for each others skills strengths and availability.

  • Ensure the safety of CLASSE areas and programs as pertaining to hazardous materials radiation (ionizing and nonionizing) as well as occupational and laboratory safety.

  • Manage documentation for and serve as a member of the CLASSE Safety Committee which reviews successes and failures of the safety program and governs the development of CLASSE specific programs policies and procedures.

  • Administer the CLASSE radiation dosimetry program survey meter calibration/maintenance and assist with radiation program responsibilities.

  • Be responsive to Cornell EHSs lab assessments and inspections addressing findings and completing corrective actions as required by EHS.

This is a oneyear fixedterm position with the possibility of annual renewal based on performance and funding availability.

WHAT WE NEED

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity equity access inclusion and wellbeing.

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Bachelors Degree in a STEM field or equivalent and at least 2 years of advanced experience in radiation safety requirements policies and regulations.

  • General knowledge of successful and effective best practice safety policies and procedures in a Universitybased physics research environment with experience in such a role.

  • Experience developing and implementing safety policy with relevant stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of with experience in monitoring and auditing laboratory spaces for safety and compliance issues in order to prevent chemical physical radiological and biological hazards and diseases that could be present in the workplace.

  • Ability to communicate clearly collegially and succinctly in person and writing on technical safety issues required.

  • Basic MS Word Excel PowerPoint skills are required.

  • Capable of adapting to the changing needs of a research environment.

  • Able to receive directions and to communicate effectively across all research groups in the department.

  • Work effectively and cooperatively within a team environment.

  • Must be passionate about leading people and creating an environment that builds individual and organizational

WHAT WE PREFER

  • Masters Degree.

  • Strong technical writing skills.

  • Experience in or ability to quickly acquire knowledge of webbased administration tools such as Landauer myLDR Qualtrics Foswiki.

  • Hold a certification through a safety registry society or regulatory body. Such certifications include: NRRPT CHP CLSO ASP CSP CSM CSHM
