Job Description

Westerns Intensive English Program offers a pathway for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners to study English for business or social purposes or to prepare for degree study at Western. Small classes and community activities provide students with a highly immersive American experience.

About the Position

The Intensive English Program maintains a vacancy pool of qualified persons interested in temporary teaching positions. In anticipation of possible openings throughout the academic year and summer quarter applications are accepted continuously for temporary nontenure track teaching positions on a parttime basis with occasional opportunities for temporary fulltime appointments. Positions may become available at any time and are typically filled on a quarterly basis.

Faculty will provide instruction in components of a standard ESL curriculum with an academic preparation focus. Courses include grammar listening and speaking reading writing and academic preparation. Instructional levels range from beginning to advanced. Maximum number of instructional hours is 15 per week.

Length of Contracts: Contracts are available for up to four quarters fulltime benefitted positions with competitive starting salary. Multiquarter parttime and quarterly contacts are also available.

Position Responsibilities: Provide classroom instruction as assigned; attend regular staff meetings; maintain a minimum of 2 regular office hours per week; serve as homeroom instructor/student advisor as needed; participate in orientationweek events such as testing and placement advising and registration; participate in closing week activities such as advising testing conferences and closing ceremonies; participate in field trips and/or social activities as appropriate; and collaborate with other faculty and participate in professional development activities. Instructors are also expected to participate in ongoing curriculum development projects and to contribute to program alignment with program accreditation university goals and expectations.

Required Qualifications
  • 1 MA TESL or 2 MA in closely related field with evidence of the following provided: graduate course work in linguistics and English linguistics culture and society educational foundations secondlanguage pedagogy secondlanguage assessment and language teaching and; practicum preferably in intensive academic preparation English program
  • 2 years of teaching experience in a university or collegebased IEP
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse students faculty and staff including a commitment to cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to teach a range of skill areas at all proficiency levels
  • Experience with accreditation
  • Experience living in another culture
  • Knowledge of another language
