Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Director and in keeping with the parish mission of renewing lives and forming missionary disciples this position is primarily responsible for all parish ministries directed towards students in PreK through twelfth grade. This includes overseeing the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program Wednesday Youth Formation classes Sunday Family Program Youth Sacramental Preparation Middle and High School Youth Groups and any other ministries programs or events created for youth at St. Mary Magdalen excepting Magdalens Preschool. Job Duties: The Head of Youth Catechesis (HYC) is responsible for: Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Our parish will be offering Level One of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to students aged 35 on Sunday Mornings as part of the family program and in conjunction with the Preschools Chapel lessons. The HYC will: - Ensure that the Atrium is wellsupplied and in good order.
- Ensure that the Atrium is staffed with qualified catechists.
- Create an annual class calendar for the CGS program.
- Oversee registration for the CGS program.
- Keep accurate records of student participation/progress in CGS Level One.
- Communicate in a timely manner with the parents of CGS students.
- Create and manage the budget for the CGS program.
Wednesday Youth Formation Our parish offers religious formation classes to students in grades 18 on Wednesday evenings from 5:306:45PM. The HYC will be responsible for: - Personally attending all Wednesday Youth Formation sessions unless absent due to emergency or approved PTO.
- Recruiting qualified catechists for each grade level as well as other program volunteers.
- Managing catechist volunteers through regular communication training classroom visits and classroom evaluations.
- Classroom assignments decorations and supplies.
- Advising the Director regarding curriculum selection.
- Creating an annual class schedule.
- Creating syllabi for each class.
- Communicating with parents via email phone meetings etc.
- Resolving disciplinary issues as they arise.
- Teaching as needed.
- Assisting with lesson planning.
- Closing the West Wing after each class session and ensuring it is ready for PreK use in the morning.
- Managing the program budget.
Sunday Family Program The parish leadership team has identified the Sunday Family Program as a strategic anchor for the evangelization and catechesis of families with schoolaged children. Managing this program will be a major responsibility of the HYC. In addition to all the same responsibilities as with the Wednesday program on Sunday they will: - Open and set up the Community Room and West Wing on Family Program mornings.
- Lead the preMass portion of the program on a rotating basis with the Director.
- Regularly survey parents regarding their experience of the program.
- Organize an annual service project for program families.
- Close all program spaces after each class session and ensure they are ready for use by other parish groups before Monday morning.
Youth Sacramental Prep The HYC will be in charge of overseeing the First Reconciliation and Eucharist program as well as the Middle School and High School Confirmation programs. This includes: - Ensuring that students are properly prepared and disposed to receive the sacraments.
- Scheduling planning and executing annual First Communion Middle School Confirmation and High School Confirmation retreats.
- Coordinating the Confirmation Mass with the Diocese of Lansing and other area parishes.
- Reviewing Confirmation program applications and interviewing candidates.
- Grading Confirmation assignments.
- Coordinating service hour opportunities for Confirmation students.
- Leading informational parent meetings.
- Attending all youth sacramental liturgies.
- Teaching Confirmation class when needed.
- Managing the budget for Sacramental programming.
Middle and High School Youth Groups St. Mary Magdalen has Middle and High School youth groups that meet on alternating Wednesdays from 7:008:30PM. The HYC will serve alongside the parishs volunteer youth ministers as their staff liaison and coleader. The HYC will be responsible for: - With rare exceptions attending all youth group meetings and functions.
- Helping plan youth group meetings and events.
- Planning the annual Steubenville Conference trip and serving as the head chaperone for the trip.
- Managing the Youth Group budget.
- Providing regular communication to the parents of youth group students.
