Job Description
Summary/objective
Maintenance mechanics provide general maintenance and repair services to buildings and fixtures. They perform these tasks in shop or onsite indoors and out using a wide variety of tools and equipment. They may be required to work additional hours or on weekends if necessary to meet service requirements.
Essential functions

- Assist in construction repair preventative maintenance assembly and installation of locks plumbing fixtures pumps piping fire alarms fire safety systems boilers chemical mixing equipment HVAC systems chill water and condensate systems.
- Assist in the completion of minor construction projects.
- Assist in procuring equipment and materials necessary for maintenance projects and minor construction. Loads delivers unloads and handles materials. Operates shop vehicles necessary to complete these tasks.
- Assists contractors in locating and gaining access to facilities and structures within them.
Competencies
- Experience in general maintenance work.
- Knowledge of materials and tools used in such work.
- General knowledge of changing air filters belts and oil in air compressors and HVAC equipment.

Physical demands
- Requires full range of body motion including reaching stooping kneeling climbing and walking. Must be able to lift/carry items weighing up to 50 lbs. Requires standing for extended periods of time. Requires ability to operate motorized equipment requiring manual dexterity. Must have good vision with or without corrective lenses.
- Must be able to understand/follow basic safety precautions involved in the use of maintenance materials the operation of the hand and power tools and use of personal safety items.

Required education and experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2 years experience in the maintenance field.
- Ability to communicate with contractors.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to read blue prints.
- Working as a team player.
- Must have a valid Commonwealth of Virginia vehicle operators license.
Preferred education and experience
- Maintenance experience in a higher education setting.
- Experience with being on call periodically.
