Department Overview

The Knight Cardiovascular Institute (KCVI) is recognized as a top integrated center for cardiovascular clinical care translational research and professional training in all aspects of heart and vascular disease. Guided by a multidisciplinary approach researchers and clinicians drive a vibrant translational research program which focuses on delivering the latest knowledge and cutting edge care to patients. Specifically research at KCVI seeks to improve patient outcomes by achieving earlier diagnosis of disease more accurate monitoring of its progression and tailoring therapy to the molecular basis of disease.

Function/Duties of Position

The position reflects a postgraduate amyloidosis fellowship program in which a physician postinternal medicine or cardiology training will be appointed for a one year. The appointee will be within the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine Cardiomyopathy Section and shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the universitys missions and goals of teaching research patient care outreach and public service.

As a member of the Knight Cardiovascular Institute you will report to the Amyloidosis Fellowship Program Director and the Division Head and be responsible for duties in the areas outlined below:

1. Education: A) Fully participate in postgraduate Cardiac Amyloidosis Fellowship program obtaining the below skills required to become proficient and competent in the care of patients suffering from amyloid cardiomyopathy develop a deep understanding of the pathophysiology and literature that inform our treatment and participate in clinical and/or basic research to help further the communal knowledge of cardiac amyloidosis. In addition these core competencies individuals will also learn about and become expert in strain echocardiography 3D echocardiography contrast echocardiography myocardial perfusion studies technetium pyrophosphate imaging cardiac MRI and PETMRI. Fellows are expected to develop a scientific question and under the guidance of teaching staff and mentors design a study aimed at answering that question. Formal departmental presentation of their work will be mandatory and it is expected that this will result in presentation at a national meeting and/or publication within a peer reviewed journal. B) OHSU is a teaching facility and you will be expected to participate in teaching medical students and residents in the clinical setting as well as through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year. You will receive your teaching assignments from the Program Director &/or the Chairman.

2. Clinical: The Program Director will assign your clinical schedule. You will work as an instructor within the department. The clinical schedule will be determined based on the resident/medical student schedules and the specific procedures and assignments taking place therein. A typical schedule for both clinical and educational activities includes clinical rotations such as:

  • Monday Imaging Day (MRI echo nuclear) with 2 week rotations in pathology cath lab (endomyocardial biopsy) bone marrow biopsy and BMT service/clinic
  • Tuesday Amyloidosis Clinic (cardiology)
  • Wednesday Rotating through subspecialty clinics alternating with research day every other week
  • Thursday Amyloidosis Clinic (Oncology)
  • Friday Multidisciplinary amyloidosis clinic alternating with research day every other week

Required Qualifications

  • M.D. or equivalent degree/training
  • Completion of an Internal Medicine Residency and/or cardiology residency/fellowship
  • Acceptance into the Cardiac Amyloidosis Fellowship Program
  • Oregon Licensure at time of hire
  • ACLS/BLS DEA Certificate at time of hire
