Job Description

Are you interested in enhancing your professional development skills and making valuable connections with students and alumni Apply to be a committee member for one of the five Professional Development (PD) committees! This fantastic opportunity provides you with the opportunity to build your professional skills by working alongside companies and alumni in engineering planning events and coordinating meaningful student initiatives.

Below are the main goals of the committees:

Industry Relations: Provide Queens students with the opportunities and resources to help them connect with and stand out to employers.

Workshops: Provide Queens students with opportunities to gain and finetune professional skills before graduation.

Marketing: Publicize all Professional Development (PD) events across a variety of platforms (ILC social media AllEng and PD Connects) to make students aware of upcoming opportunities and increase student engagement.

Alumni Relations: Provide Queens students with opportunities to connect with engineering alumni for mentorship networking and more.

Alumni Networking Summit: Organize the annual Alumni Networking Summit which provides Queens students with the opportunity to network and speak candidly with alumni across different fields of work.

Note: No experience is required for this position. You will have the opportunity to expand your professional development knowledge in this role. Also you are allowed to apply to multiple committees just make sure to list your top choice and alternative options in the application (do not submit 2 separate applications).

Below are more detailed descriptions of the key responsibilities of the committee members on each committee:

Industry Relations Committee: They are responsible for maintaining and growing the relationships between Queens undergraduate engineers and industry representatives from a large variety of companies. They are also responsible for running the Professional Development Teams resume review service. This is an excellent opportunity to support your peers while also developing your own networking and professional skills. There is also a lot of room for growth in this portfolio if you have your own ideas on how to increase students industry connections. Applicants should demonstrate strong organization and communication skills.

Key responsibilities include:
Maintaining and growing relationships with industry professionals
Coordinating networking events and information sessions
Overseeing the resume review service

Time commitment:
1 weekly meeting with the Industry Relations Committee
Additional time spent organizing industry events with your team

Workshops Committee: The workshops organized by the committee vary year to year and cover a wide variety of topics. Past workshops have ranged from prepping for interviews to developing specific technical skills such as a Resume and Cover Letter workshop. There is a lot of freedom in this role to be creative and come up with your own ideas for professional development workshops. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with many groups both on campus and in industry to develop and deliver workshops for students. Applicants should demonstrate strong organization and communication skills.

Key responsibilities include:
Collaborating with student groups on campus to develop and deliver workshop content
Assisting with logistics associated with workshop delivery

Time commitment:
1 weekly meeting with the Workshops Committee
Additional time spent organizing the workshops with your team

Marketing Committee: They work closely with all of the other Professional Development committees to promote their events to students. You will also have the freedom to design new social media campaigns if you wish. Past Instagram campaigns @engsocpd) have included Queens Perspective and This Week Online. This position is a great opportunity to improve your creative and graphic design skills. Applicants should demonstrate strong organization and communication skills.

Key responsibilities include:
Developing promotional materials for PD events
Maintaining the PD website
Writing the weekly newsletter (PD Connects)

Time commitment:
1 weekly meeting with the Marketing Committee
Additional time spent creating marketing material with your team

Alumni Relations Committee: Queens Engineering has a huge focus on building a community both while attending Queens and postgraduation. Our alumni are an invaluable resource and are very willing to help current students as much as they can. The Alumni Relations Committee is responsible for organizing initiatives to connect students and alumni allowing alumni to share their wealth of knowledge. The benefits of these relationships extend from growing your professional network to gaining a real perspective on life after Queens. Past initiatives have included job shadowing and mentorship programs First Year Discipline Selection Brunch Clark Hall Pub Social and more. There is a lot of freedom in this role to come up with your own ideas for initiatives to connect students and alumni. Applicants should demonstrate strong organization and communication skills.

Key responsibilities include:
Maintaining and growing relationships with alumni
Organizing events to connect students and alumni for the purposes of mentorship and networking

Time commitment:

1 weekly meeting with the Director of Professional Development
1 weekly meeting with the Alumni Relations Committee
Additional time spent organizing alumni initiatives with your team


Alumni Networking Summit Committee: The Alumni Networking Summit Committee oversees the organization of the annual Alumni Networking Summit. The Summit is a daylong event hosted every January in Downtown Toronto with the aim to connect students and alumni. The event involves several keynote speakers networking activities and workshops. Applicants should demonstrate strong leadership organization and communication skills.

Key responsibilities include:
Overseeing all preparations for the Alumni Networking Summit
Maintaining relationships with industry representatives who support the Summit (ex. Cisco) and alumni

Time commitment:
1 weekly meeting with the Alumni Networking Summit Committee
Additional time spent organizing the Alumni Networking Summit with your team
