Job Description

Title: Housing & Residence Life Graduate Assistant for Assignments

General Summary

Supervision Received.

The Director of Housing & Residence Life at Eastern Michigan University is responsible for the vision direction and process of the department. The Director is responsible for personnel but delegates the supervision of the Graduate Assistant for Assignments to the Assignments Coordinator.

Under the supervision of the Assignments Coordinator the Graduate Assistant for Assignments will primarily focus on behindthescenes departmental functions including assignments and occupancy management. Position functions include coordination and implementation of all aspects pertaining to the residence hall and apartment assignments process including contract management and assignment of students to rooms. The GA will interact and communicate with prospective students and parents including providing information responding to parental and student inquiries and concerns and assisting with tours of the residence halls and apartments. The GA will collaborate with departments across campus and help represent our department at campus visit days orientation and campus fairs. The Graduate Assistant for Assignments will also participate in the oncall duty rotation other departmental duties and annual programs which may include but is not limited to training recruitment and selection and other departmental initiatives and committees.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Occupancy Management

  • Assist with the overall organization of the assignments area including maintaining documents databases communications and timelines including assignments process StarRez and Blackboard manuals housing contracts Google documents HRL Website and StarRez reports.
  • Assist with the creation training and implementation of assignment process procedures which include comprehensive written materials.
  • Maintain assignment information on the HRL website
  • Assist with daily communication via the Housing email
  • Assist Senior Account Specialist with daily front desk communications and
  • Interact and communicate with prospective students and parents including providing information responding to parental and student inquiries and concerns and assisting with tours of the residence halls and other oncampus venues

Housing Events & Projects

  • Work with the marketing team to create assignments for marketing materials*
  • Assist with representation at orientation and recruitment events*
  • Assist with any assignments or occupancy management projects

Administration

  • Work 20 office hours per week. Hours include inoffice time meetings and committee work. Office Hours will be determined by you and the Assignments Coordinator. During office hours you may schedule meetings with students. Missed office hours must be made up. Makeup office hours should be scheduled with the supervisor upon your return to work.
  • Maintain an active presence in the community through formal and informal interactions.
  • Prepare endofyear and transition reports at the end of the Winter Semester.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the department.

Training

  • Attend all departmental and building training sessions and workshops as required. This includes presenting to the professional graduate and student staff regarding areas of responsibility (opening closing key management etc.
  • Work with the Assignments Coordinator to create and implement ongoing training/development according to staff needs.
  • Assist with the coordination of new and returning Student Staff selection (for both midyear and fall hires).

Crisis Intervention

  • Participate in a graduate staff duty rotation for the residential area on all days that the residential facilities are open with the exceptions listed below. Stay within a ten 10 minute radius of campus while on duty.
  • Respond to crises and emergency situations using departmental protocol which includes inperson response and providing guidance to Student Staff and students.
  • Provide appropriate postcrisis referrals and followup with students and staff.

Maintenance and Operations

  • Report ongoing facility and safety/security needs.
  • Work cooperatively with Gilbane staff to identify and coordinate staff response to maintenance concerns.*
  • Keep control at all times over all University issued items such as keys and staff IDs

Counseling/Helping/Conflict Management

  • Serve as a resource and referral agent for students and staff with a focus on student success.

Departmental Involvement

  • Participate in at least one departmental committee.
  • Attend various departmental meetings on a weekly/biweekly basis including but not limited to:
    • Housing & Residence Life Department meeting (two hours weekly)
    • Meeting with supervisor (one hour weekly)
    • Housing Services and/or Housing Staff meeting (two hours weekly)
    • Committee Meeting (one and a half hours weekly plus outside assignments)
  • Attend and participate in all departmental graduate and Student Staff trainings.
  • Assist with professional staff selection as requested by the department.
  • Collaborate with other departmental and university offices such as EMUPD Wellness Center Student Life Diversity and Community Involvement Gilbane and Athletics.
  • Represent the department at various functions such as Division of Student Affairs training and events Opening and Closing Banquets Student Staff InService training RHA and NRHH events and other events as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must have attained a bachelors degree prior to the first day of appointment.

Must be enrolled in the Higher Education and Student Affairs Management/Administration or related graduate program at EasternMichigan University.

Must maintain a semester and cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 each semester during the dates of appointment.

Must maintain fulltime status and carry a minimum of six 6 credit hours per semester unless otherwise permitted by the Graduate School.

Maintain good standing with the Department of Housing & Residence Life as well as academic conduct and financial good standing within the University.

Be available for the position for the full academic year.

Special Instructions:

The start date for this position is July 28 2025. The successful candidate will be expected to arrive on campus and move into their assigned hall July. Candidates should be currently admitted to a graduate program at Eastern Michigan University.

STIPEND & BENEFITS
The stipend includes a tuition waiver for nine credit hours for the fall and winter semesters and a $ 8000 academic year stipend. A furnished apartment or suite meal plan during the term of employment.
Summer employment & housing may also be available.

All graduate assistantships are offered under the guidelines of the EMU Graduate School. Those hired by Housing and Residence Life (HRL) are subject to all rules and protocols as determined by the graduate school in addition to any work rules for HRL. Those hired are responsible for knowing and following these guidelines.
