Job Description

Researcher 3/Remote Pilot Technologist PN

Job Duties:

In the Office of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) independently coordinates research efforts & projects with other departmental units outside agencies &/or consultants to upgrade roads structures & landscapes & to resolve UAS equipment issues & support UAS equipment needs. Reviews & analyzes problem or issue to be researched & develops appropriate research tools (e.g. data forms indexes processing packages conceptual models publications methodology design of experiments hypotheses testing). Designs & implements research projects (e.g. Operates rotorcraft & fixed wing UAS platforms to collect &/or verify infrastructure & land information) & prepares & maintains necessary reports records &/or technical evaluations relative to unmanned vehicle projects (e.g. Flight Operations; Risk assessments; Mechanical documents; accidents & incidents; inventory management; equipment condition). Conducts premission planning with the flight operations requestor develops flight plans by utilizing computer & related software (e.g. UAS specific software Universal Ground Control Station (UGCS) checks &/or files Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) checks weather & coordinates airspace integration with any controlling agencies & privatelyowned properties within the operation location when necessary conducts premission briefings with requestor & operations team; completes safety risk assessment prior to flight). Solves problems on the ground in realtime & performs unmanned aircraft equipment troubleshooting in the field. Performs aircraft & operation afteraction reviews when needed. Prepares maps charts & intelligence reports utilizing a computer & related Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software applications (e.g. Google Earth ESRI Software Feature Manipulation Engine (FME) to extract examine &/or visualize data & to interpret & analyze trends. Provides detailed information to supervisor for further analysis. Organizes processes & delivers acquired data in a timely manner to UAS Data Manager &/or requestor.

Serves as liaison to ODOT Division of Information Technology (DoIT) & DAS Office of Information Technology (OIT) for the lifecycle of UAS projects & equipment implementation. Manages & maintains software hardware & equipment with an IT component. Troubleshoots issues with software hardware & equipment. Provides technical recommendations & expertise on UAS projects & equipment. Serves as resource person & technical advisor in areas of research by replying to requests for information &/or representing agency in meetings with government or industry representatives &/or public or testifying in hearings.
