The Traffic specialist provides logistical support to all Southern Company systemwide business units ensuring the timely and efficient transportation of materials and equipment. This role requires making critical business decisions regarding transportation methods during routine operations planned and forced outages and emergency storm restoration efforts. The position demands extensive knowledge of carriers Department of Transportation (D.O.T. regulations and utility materials and equipment. The successful candidate must be available for oncall shifts to support outages and storm restoration efforts.
Key Responsibilities Logistics & Transportation Management - Assist internal customers with transportation needs ensuring timely deliveries of materials and equipment in both routine and emergency situations.
- Determine the best mode of transportation for various shipping needs including LTL Truck Load Parcel Hotshot Dedicated and Air Freight.
- Maintain knowledge of DOT rules and regulations including hazardous materials transportation.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with carriers suppliers and internal stakeholders.
- Negotiate freight contracts to optimize cost savings and efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with NMFC classifications OS/OW regulations and international freight requirements.
Process Improvement & Compliance - Resolve logistical issues and provide innovative logistics solutions to meet business needs.
- Maintain knowledge of contractual agreements with carriers to maximize freight savings.
- Review freight invoices for accuracy and ensure proper billing.
- Stay up to date with industry regulations best practices and advancements in transportation services.
Job Requirements Education & Experience - High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelors degree in Business Supply Chain or a related field preferred.
- Prior experience in the transportation services field.
- Experience managing all aspects of transportation logistics including LTL Truck Load Parcel Hotshot Dedicated and Air Freight.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel Outlook).
Knowledge & Skills - Strong understanding of logistics operations to efficiently route materials and equipment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of carriers NMFC classifications DOT regulations and hazardous material transportation.
- Familiarity with air freight truck hotshot OS/OW regulations and international freight requirements.
- Ability to review analyze and negotiate freight contracts for cost efficiency.
- Knowledge of Transmission & Distribution (T&D) and Power Generation materials & equipment.
