Job Description

Priory Chapter (Chapter) is the presiding governing body for the Order of St John in New Zealand and is responsible for setting the strategic direction and values of the organisation. Chapter Members are appointed to ensure and uphold the objectives and principles of the Priory and provide oversight guidance and support to the Priory Board (PB) in discharging their delegated governance authority. Collectively the Priory Chapter ensures alignment of Hato Hone St Johns strategic direction and approach while engaging widely in our communities to

              ensure their needs are listened to and represented

              advocate for and promote the work of St John

              ensure that service deprivation and inequities are addressed

              advocate and champion the understanding and recognition of Tikanga Mori and the Hato Hone St John Tiriti alignment strategy.

To support our Manaaki Ora strategy we are now seeking to appoint two additional Chapter Members of Mori descent to enhance and enable Chapters collective capability at a senior governance level. Specifically ensuring that Tikanga Mori principles are applied to strategic thinking and delivery to support a demonstrable focus on health equity and quality improvement for Hauora Mori and actively seek opportunities to develop an effective Tiriti/Treatybased based lens to service delivery and inclusion.

The first appointment will have an external lens  ensuring that key external stakeholders and communities are heard and represented in providing strategic leadership and stewardship to the Priory.

The second appointment will bring an inwardfacing view within and across Hato Hone St John to strengthen in house relationships enhance the interests of members managers and work collaboratively to bring about systemic transformation within Hato Hone St John.

The Chapter Member is a voluntary position and members are required to attend 4 Chapter Meetings per annum as well as participate in working groups committee meetings ceremonies or other forums from time to time. Additionally Chapter Members must commit time to engaging in their communities and with key stakeholder groups internally and externally.  Meeting attendance can be a combination of Teams or inperson. Chapter appointments are for three years.

We are open to location and Hato Hone St John will reimburse any necessary expenses.


Qualifications :

All of our Priory Chapter members support the values and Kaupapa of Hato Hone St John. Were also looking for the following

  • Individuals of Mori descent
  • Knowledge and expertise in Te Ao Mori Tikanga and Te Reo Mori
  • Previous governance experience as a Board or Committee member in the community or volunteer environment
  • Experience in Hauora / oranga systems and / or services.
  • Strong connections across iwi
  • Understands broad governance concepts responsibilities and obligations to members and community stakeholders
  • Well informed understanding of St John core activities communities healthcare and primary health environments
  • Effective relationship development maintenance and advocacy skills both internally and externally
  • An effective and open communicator with strong listening and questioning skills that enhance understanding and decisionmaking.
  • Applicants for the internal facing role need to be members of the Order of St John or an existing Hato Hone St John volunteer for a minimum of 6 months.
