Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

1. Planning and Delivering Lessons

  • Develop lesson plans that cover a range of musical concepts, including music theory, history, performance, composition, and listening skills.
  • Deliver engaging lessons that encourage students to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical musical abilities.
  • Teach students various aspects of music, such as reading music, scales, chords, rhythm, melody, and harmony.
  • Provide opportunities for students to engage in practical music-making, whether through singing, instrumental playing, composing, or arranging.
  • Adapt lessons to cater to different skill levels, from beginners to advanced students, ensuring all students are challenged and supported.

2. Assessment and Tracking Progress

  • Assess students' musical progress through both practical and theoretical assessments, such as performances, compositions, quizzes, and written tests.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students, helping them identify areas for improvement and encouraging their musical development.
  • Track students’ progress over time and adjust teaching strategies to meet individual needs.
  • Prepare students for formal music exams or assessments (e.g., GCSE Music, A-Level Music, or music performance exams).

3. Classroom Management

  • Maintain a positive and organized classroom environment that fosters creativity, respect, and collaboration.
  • Implement clear rules and expectations for behavior, particularly when working with instruments or in group settings.
  • Use effective classroom management techniques to ensure that students remain focused and engaged, especially during practical sessions.
  • Encourage cooperative learning through group activities, ensemble performances, and music projects.

Desired candidate profile


An educational degree, such as Bachelor’s in Education Degree or related field.
A certified teaching qualification such PGCE, QTS with an Induction Certificate or equivalent (the PGCE must be accompanied by a subject relevant Bachelor’s Degree)
Minimum two years of teaching experience (international experience is an advantage but not required)
Exceptional subject knowledge, with extensive experience of teaching the British National Curriculum and trained in a Secondary school environment.
A passion for fostering a student-centered learning environment.
A commitment to professional growth and a collaborative approach to teaching.
A proven track record of providing outstanding teaching and learning.
A commitment to actively participate in extracurricular activities after school hours
Encouraging Musical Development
Foster students’ musical growth by providing opportunities for both individual and group performances, such as school concerts, talent shows, or competitions.
Encourage ensemble work, where students can play or sing together in groups, learning the value of collaboration and listening to others.
Offer additional support to students who are interested in further developing their skills, such as offering extracurricular music clubs, ensemble groups, or private lessons.
