Job Summary

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced Japanese litigation and disputes lawyers with strong expertise in contentious matters procedural law legal analysis and professional legal review.

This role focuses on evaluating responses to real-world questions of Japanese law. Selected lawyers will compare outputs produced by two legal research systems assess their accuracy and reasoning against a standardised rubric and provide concise expert feedback.

Key Responsibilities

Japanese Litigation & Disputes Review

  • Evaluate legal responses involving Japanese litigation disputes and contentious matters
  • Assess the accuracy and completeness of legal reasoning
  • Identify incorrect legal principles unsupported conclusions and material omissions
  • Review application of Japanese procedural and substantive law
  • Apply practical judgement developed through litigation or disputes practice

Comparative Legal Analysis

  • Review responses generated independently by two different systems
  • Compare outputs side by side for accuracy relevance completeness and reasoning quality
  • Identify meaningful differences in legal analysis and conclusions
  • Determine which response more effectively addresses the underlying legal question
  • Distinguish substantive legal deficiencies from minor drafting differences

Procedural Law Review

  • Assess responses involving Japanese court procedure and litigation processes
  • Evaluate procedural reasoning jurisdictional considerations remedies and litigation strategy where relevant
  • Identify incorrect or incomplete treatment of procedural requirements
  • Review whether conclusions appropriately reflect the applicable Japanese legal framework
  • Apply experienced judgement to realistic contentious-law scenarios

Legal Research & Reasoning

  • Assess whether legal authorities and principles are used appropriately
  • Evaluate the logical progression from legal issue to conclusion
  • Identify unsupported assumptions or gaps in analysis
  • Review whether answers address the relevant facts and legal issues directly
  • Assess overall professional credibility from the perspective of an experienced Japanese practitioner

Structured Evaluation & Scoring

  • Score each response against a provided standardised rubric
  • Apply evaluation criteria consistently across assignments
  • Document material errors and strengths clearly
  • Provide concise written justification for evaluation decisions
  • Complete reviews independently and within agreed deadlines

Ideal Profile

  • At least 2 years of law-firm experience with 3 years preferred
  • Professional experience focused on litigation disputes or contentious practice
  • Primarily law-firm experience is required
  • Candidates currently working in-house may be suitable where they moved in-house within the last 2 years following relevant law-firm experience
  • Qualified to practise in Japan as a bengoshi or registered foreign lawyer / gaikokuho jimu bengoshi
  • Strong command of Japanese litigation and procedural law
  • Ability to evaluate complex legal reasoning accurately and efficiently
  • Native or fluent Japanese
  • Precise written communication and strong attention to legal detail
  • Comfortable working independently against structured evaluation criteria

Engagement Details

  • Part-time independent contractor engagement
  • Fully remote
  • Initial commitment of approximately 10 hours with strong potential for additional work
  • Flexible scheduling based on project requirements
  • Compensation: $130$140/hour
  • Work involves comparative review and scoring of responses to Japanese legal questions
  • All project work is subject to confidentiality requirements and NDA
  • Projects may be extended shortened or concluded based on project needs and performance
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer client law firm institution or other third party
  • H1-B and STEM OPT support is unavailable for this engagement
