Job Summary

As one of the worlds largest solar energy research institutes the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE makes a significant contribution to a sustainableeconomical secure and socially equitable energy supply worldwide. Our goal is to advance the energy transition by providing concrete implementable technologicalsolutions through excellent research results successful industrial collaborations and spin-offs. To this end our 1300 employees conduct research in four key areas:energy supply energy distribution energy storage and energy utilization. Fraunhofer ISEs state-of-the-art R&D infrastructure with 22300 m² of laboratory spaceenables cutting-edge research at an international level.

Be part of change

Would you like to play an active role in shaping the energy transition and write your thesis on this topic With us youll find the experts and the environment you need to make these goals a reality.

You will support our Silicon Solar Cells group which focuses on the development of high-efficiency silicon solar cells and silicon-based tandem solar cells. To achieve the highest possible efficiencies with perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells effective engineering of the interfaces is necessary. Layer systems consisting of Al₂O₃ and TiO₂ have the potential to improve the interface between the perovskite absorber and the electron contact by both effectively passivating the surface and increasing stability.

For our group Silicon Solar Cells we are looking for a student assistant to begin as soon as possible with the opportunity to write a masters thesis on the topic Development of an ALD Layer for Passivating ETL Contacts for the following tasks:

  • The goal of your thesis is to develop a method using atomic layer deposition (ALD) to passivate the interface between the perovskite absorber and the electron contact in perovskite solar cells.
  • You will develop the process for depositing the Al₂O₃ and TiO₂ layer system on our ALD system (FlexAL).
  • You will prepare the appropriate test substrates.
  • You will measure the optical structural and electrical properties of the layers using ellipsometry UV-vis spectroscopy and IV measurements.
  • You will integrate the developed layers into perovskite solar cells and analyze their functionality within the device.
  • You will analyze and present the results.

What you contribute

  • You are studying a science or technology-related field such as microsystems engineering physics or a comparable discipline.
  • You plan and complete tasks independently to a high standard and enjoy carrying them out.
  • You are proficient in using MS Office.
  • You have already successfully demonstrated your excellent written and spoken German and English skills.

What we offer

  • Exclusive insights: By working together with the scientists in our department you will gain insights into the day-to-day research and development work at aresearch institute.
  • Laboratory infrastructure:At Fraunhofer ISE we work with state-of-the-art equipment and devices so that research projects can be carried out using the latest technology. (Achtung: nur nutzen wenn die Stelle Laborbezug hat!)
  • Research mix: You will have the opportunity to combine experimental work with theory thus applying and expanding the knowledge you gained during your studies.
  • Supervision: You will be supervised by scientists during your work and receive feedback on your progress.
  • Teamwork: You will gain experience in working in a team with our scientific and student staff and can contribute the experience you have already gained.
  • Working hours and location: We offer you the opportunity to flexibly adjust your working hours to your needs and to occasionally work from home.
