JOB TITLE: WFP Volunteer

TYPE OF CONTRACT: Voluntary Assignment

UNIT/DIVISION: Forecasting and Early Warning Unit Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Service Programme Division

DUTY STATION (City Country): Rome Italy

DURATION: 2 months

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The Data Science team in the Forecasting & Early Warning Unit develops AIdriven models to forecast food insecurity nutrition and its drivers. Using large diverse datasets and advanced algorithms the team detects hidden patterns anticipates the impacts of natural and humanmade hazards and supports timely datadriven interventions. This work enables governments and humanitarian partners to act early strengthen resilience and reduce the effects of food crises.

The Unit is building a new early warning tool piloted in highpriority countries combining privatesector AI expertise with WFPs operational knowledge. The Data Scientist intern will design and develop or support the development of AI models related to food insecurity and nutrition.

DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support research and design AI models related to food insecurity/nutrition.

  • Support ad-hoc data explorations and analysis for the project by means of traditional statistical analysis as well as state-of-the-art data science methodologies.

  • Support the writing of technical papers or reports.

  • Participate in meetings as requested.

  • Perform other tasks as required.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

  • The development or support in the development of an AI model related to food insecurity/nutrition including the code and methodological approach.

  • Maintenance of the code base following industrys best practices.

  • Documentation of the outputs in a technical report or scientific paper.

  • Presentations on the technical aspects of the project as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Education: Masters degree in economics data science physics mathematics or similar.

Experience: Up to 1 years of experience related to the field.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Python programming skills and experience with data science libraries (pandas NumPy scikit-learn Keras etc)

  • Advanced knowledge of statistics and passion for machine learning with an understanding of algorithms

  • Experience in git is an asset

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively and respectfully in a diverse and multicultural team environment

Languages: Be fluent (level C) in English.
