BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION

The Public Partnerships Division (PPD) under the Partnerships and Innovation (PI) Department leads WFP engagement with government and intergovernmental partners and public financing channels. It works with Global Offices and donor account teams to protect grow and diversify WFPs public funding base.

The PI CO Support Hub sits within PPD and provides 360 Partnerships Support to Country Offices in close coordination with Global Offices Donor Accounts and other Global Functions and Regional Director Office teams. It provides support across planning business development operational delivery and knowledge management and learning including analytical products and data enabled tools that strengthen resource mobilization decision making.

Working arrangement: Preference is for in person however hybrid or remote can also be considered

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This internship will support a practical predictive modelling workstream for Partnerships to help anticipate new contributions based on historical data. Predictive modelling uses historical patterns and relevant input variables to estimate a future outcome for example the likelihood expected value or expected timing of a contribution. The intern will work with the team and share analysis outputs with the developers who integrate results into dashboards or agents.

Key responsibilities
  • Help define a small set of prediction questions with the team for example likelihood of a new contribution within a period expected value bands or expected time to confirmation.

  • Prepare a clean analysis dataset from existing sources document definitions and assumptions handle missing values and produce simple features such as past giving patterns geography and theme tags and pipeline stage indicators.

  • Build and compare a small number of baseline models for example logistic regression linear regression and simple tree-based models focusing on clarity and reproducibility rather than complexity.

  • Evaluate model performance with simple metrics for example accuracy error measures for regression and basic calibration checks summarise what works and where the model is less reliable.

  • Produce interpretable outputs for example top drivers and simple scenarios and translate findings into short notes and visuals for Partnerships colleagues.

  • Prepare a short handover pack for the developer team what the model predicts required inputs how outputs should be interpreted and suggested refresh approach.

Indicative deliverables by end of assignment
  • One cleaned analysis dataset and a short data note covering sources key fields assumptions and limitations.

  • A baseline predictive model with a simple evaluation summary and an interpretation note including key drivers and caveats.

  • A short slide or memo summarising results and how they can support prioritisation and planning.

  • A concise handover pack for developers describing the model inputs and outputs and monitoring suggestions.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Be a Masters student or a graduate in a relevant field for example Statistics Data Science or AI Computer Science Information Systems Econometrics or International Development with a strong quantitative focus from a recognized university.

  • Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency level C). Working knowledge of another official UN language (French Spanish Arabic Chinese Russian plus Portuguese) is an asset.

  • Strong skills in statistical analysis and modelling and practical experience in Python or R for data processing and modelling.

  • Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences and to document work so others can reproduce results.

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Throughout the assignment selected candidates have access to an industry leading learning platform WeLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds he or she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars as appropriate.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment the selected candidate should be able to analyse partnerships and development funding data build and validate a predictive model for new contributions interpret results for decision making and translate technical work into clear documentation and recommendations for product development.

TYPE OF ASSIGNMENT

This opportunity is particularly well suited for students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in an international organization. The selected candidate will receive IT equipment and training material however financial compensation and medical coverage are not provided by WFP.
