UNHRD is an emergency preparedness and response tool for WFP and the wider humanitarian community. UNHRD manages six (6) strategically located hub worldwide (Panama Ghana Italy Malaysia Spain and UAE). The UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) managed by the World Food Programme (WFP) has evolved significantly since its inception in 2000 in Brindisi. Originally tasked with providing rapid accessible stockpiling and mobilization services it has become a cornerstone of global emergency response. UNHRDs mandate to assist populations in crisis through preposition relief and logistical support has led to the establishment of a global Network of prepositioning Hubs. UNHRD is now launching an innovation program that aims to create an ecosystem of innovators to support the improvement of the emergency within the humanitarian context. To do so UNHRD requires the mobilization of a great deal of knowledge from many different sectors to ensure the cutting-edge formulation of innovative strategies procedures technologies and solutions. The ability of ensuring the most innovative solution will play a crucial role for UNHRD in assisting their partners as a global humanitarian platform to ensure the best solutions for entire humanitarian sector allowing: to support effective delivery of relief efforts through the global hubs facilitating better co-ordination and providing specialized training; to partnerships that strengthen the humanitarian community including between UN agencies NGOs governmental organizations and universities; to facilitate research and development into innovative solutions and products with a strong focus on greening initiatives including encouraging a shift to renewable energy sources and promoting the reuse and recycling of materials; and to incorporate human-centered design approaches to all the design and delivery endeavors related to innovation processes. To ensure these objectives UNHRD is aiming at creating an Innovation Task Force of professional and academic experts that can support advise and execute strategic and scientific support to UNHRD network in becoming innovation lead among all the humanitarian partners.

Under the overall guidance of the UNHRD Lab Head of Unit the consultant will perform the following:

  • Provide guidance on program guidelines and review processes of the UNHRD innovation programs and activities (e.g. Innovation Lab activities New Innovation Ecosystem Program);
  • Oversee the processes for calls for proposals challenge statements selection criteria progress tracking of projects and program performance evaluations.
  • Support and contribute to the production of scientific output framing innovation in the humanitarian context. Assessing scientific social economic and environmental relevance and impacts of UNHRD innovation programs and activities.
  • Periodically review UNHRD innovation strategy and funding programs and advise on appropriateness and feasibility of long-term objectives;
  • Implement any adjustments that are deemed necessary to rectify deficiencies;
  • Benchmark UNHRD innovation programs and activities against international best practices;
  • Provide advice and guidance on strategic partnerships;
  • Defining roles of partner organizations universities and private sector to facilitate and enable successful innovation;
  • Support and define partnerships engagement strategies for innovation endeavors;
