Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) is a 150 bedded Tertiary Referral Centre for Maternity Neonatology and Gynaecology located on the campus of Cork University Hospital. CUMH incorporates the Obstetric Gynaecology Paediatric and Neonatology Services in the Cork University Hospital Group within the Health Service Executive South West region. CUMH has approximately 7 000 births per annum and is a tertiary referral centre.

Services at CUMH are delivered within the HSE South West Region which is based on the principles of partnership and integration and strongly supports the involvement of the multidisciplinary team in service provision.

CUMH is the site for clinical placements for student midwives and student nurses in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes delivered in partnership with University College Cork.

CUMH Services incorporates the use of the MN-CMS (Maternal Newborn Clinical Management System) into care delivered at CUMH.

As part of an established collaborative clinical and academic network University Hospital Kerry Cork University Maternity Hospital University Hospital Waterford and South Tipperary University Hospital are supported by the HSE South West through the Ireland South Women & Infants Network (ISWIN) and the HSE Dublin and South East through the Women and Neonatal Health Network (WNHN). ISWIN will continue to provide the established clinical pathways and academic links. Maternity Services includes Neonatology and Gynaecology as well as Midwifery and Obstetrics.

The Groups Primary Academic partner is University College Cork (UCC). A wide range of educational programmes and research is conducted within all hospitals in the Group

CUMH is the clinical site for undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery education programmes which are delivered in partnership with the School of Nursing and Midwifery at University College Cork. Clinical placements for students also extend to other outreach facilities and Health Service Providers in the Cork region.

Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE on the basis of the geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024.

Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance while also bringing decision-making closer to the frontline.

Health Regions are geographically based units with clearly defined populations. They align community and hospital services within specific areas. The HSE will retain a strong but leaner central organisation with more service provision developed at a local level.

The HSE South West health region will manage and deliver all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry. HSE South West includes all hospital and community healthcare services in the region.

South / South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare became part of HSE South West health region on 3rd March 2025 and the transition to the new structures will continue throughout 2026.

The Centre of Midwifery Education is responsible for the provision of a broad range of quality assured education training and professional development programmes for registered nurses and midwives to support them in the ongoing maintenance of competence and the provision of safe quality patient addition the Centre provides programmes of education and training for support staff involved in supporting the nursing and midwifery function and for other staff categories as relevant. Programme provision is based on identified service need and HSE organisational objectives and priorities. The Centre has a geographical remit for County Cork but may potentially incorporate the Maternity Services in the HSE Southwest Region. The Centre is part of the National Office of the Nursing & Midwifery Services Director situated in the Clinical Strategy and Programmes function in the HSE.

Aims & Objectives of the Centre

Provision of education and programmes of professional development across all Divisions of Nursing & Midwifery

Identification of the education training and development needs to support the delivery of Nursing/Midwifery care in partnership with Directors of Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development.

Provision of a comprehensive training and development programme in accordance with annually agreed objectives and organisational priorities.

Ensuring that training and development is aligned to national initiatives and to organisational objectives.

Ensuring close working relationship and liaison between higher education institutions and health service agencies

Promoting cross divisional and interagency educational practices

Promoting the professional development of staff as integral to the management of the Nursing/Midwifery resource.

Sourcing and evaluating internal and external education and training providers.

Establishing and maintaining systems to record education training and development activities in accordance with agreed procedures.

Evaluation of education training and development activities

Encouraging and supporting the research agenda at local and national level

Ensuring that education training and development activities are evidenced based

Purpose of the Post

To assist the Director of the CME in planning development and delivery of practice-based education and development programmes for nurses midwives and health care assistants

The role involves the planning budgeting co-ordinating implementing and evaluation of a range of educational initiatives across the CMEs remit with regard to Midwifery and Nursing services. Education should be based on relevant and up to date research and provide a collaborative learning environment to encourage reflection and innovation.
