Job Summary
- Decontaminate clean inspect assemble and sterilise reusable medical and surgical instruments in accordance with hospital policies and national standards.
- Operate and monitor sterilisation and decontamination equipment including washer-disinfectors and autoclaves ensuring all processes are completed safely and effectively.
- Inspect instruments and medical devices for cleanliness functionality and damage reporting any defects or maintenance requirements.
- Assemble package label and prepare instrument sets and trays for sterilisation and distribution to clinical departments.
- Maintain accurate records and traceability documentation for all decontamination and sterilisation processes.
- Ensure sterile supplies and equipment are distributed to hospital departments in a timely manner to support patient care activities.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures health and safety regulations and quality management standards at all times.
- Segregate handle and dispose of clinical waste and contaminated materials in accordance with hospital policies and legislative requirements.
- Participate in quality assurance activities audits equipment testing and continuous improvement initiatives within the department.
- Work collaboratively with clinical teams and colleagues to ensure an efficient safe and high-quality sterile services operation.
- Maintain stock levels of consumables and report shortages or equipment issues to the appropriate personnel.
- Participate in mandatory training competency assessments and continuing professional development activities relevant to the role.
Previous experience in a Hospital Sterile Services Department (HSSD) or a similar healthcare support role is desirable but not essential.
A Leaving Certificate or an equivalent level of education is required as a minimum qualification.
Possession of a relevant qualification in Sterile Services Decontamination or a related field is desirable. Candidates who do not currently hold such a qualification should demonstrate a willingness to obtain it in the future.
Experience working within an HSSD environment and knowledge of decontamination and sterilisation processes would be advantageous.
Demonstrate strong attention to detail and accuracy with an understanding of the importance of a patient-centred approach to service delivery.
Show initiative self-motivation and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team under the guidance and supervision of the HSSD Manager.
