Job Summary

Main Purpose of Role

The Electrical & Instrumentation Apprentice will support the growth and operational delivery of instrumentation services calibration activities and onsite testing within SGS GAS (Gas Analysis Services). This role combines handson technical training with structured apprenticeship phases enabling the apprentice to develop the skills and knowledge required to qualify as a Level 6 Electrical Instrumentation craftsperson.

The role involves carrying out gas analysis and analyser calibrations for a wide customer base ensuring compliance with regulatory and userspecific standards.

The apprentice will assist with the installation commissioning calibration and maintenance of measurement and control systems across industrial environments while gaining experience in gas testing sample retrieval reporting and customer support.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Learning & OnSite Work

  • Accompany experienced technicians to customer sites to support:
    • Service and calibration of instrumentation equipment.
    • Gas testing and retrieval of samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Assist in the installation commissioning and maintenance of electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Support routine maintenance activities on existing service contracts and during customer downtime.
  • Learn and apply measurement principles including pressure flow temperature and level.
  • Assist with retrieval and processing of microbial samples.

Quality & Compliance

  • Prepare accurate technical reports calibration certificates service records and gas testing documentation.
  • Support the Quality Manager in maintaining quality management systems documents and logbooks.
  • Help identify root causes of quality issues and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) safety policies and SGS Code of Integrity.
  • Maintain adherence to testing standards such as European Pharmacopeia methods.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of regulated industry requirements (GMP/GLP/GDP) and ensure all activities meet required quality standards.
    Ensure gas analysis documentation calibration certificates and quality records are accurate up to date and fully compliant.

Apprenticeship Programme Participation

  • Complete all onthejob and offthejob training phases (Phases 17).
  • Engage fully in SOLAS training centre and educational college programmes covering:
    • Electricity/Electronics
    • Installation Techniques
    • Automatic Control
    • Hazardous Environments
    • Measurement & Instrumentation Systems
    • Final Control Elements
    • Communications Systems
    • Related Theory
  • Apply classroom learning to practical industrial scenarios.
  • Ensure full compliance with the Companys Code of Integrity and Professional Conduct and act in accordance with SGS Irelands Equality & Diversity Policy and ensure others do so.

Qualifications :

Requirements

Minimum age: 16

Educational requirements:

  • Junior Certificate (Grade D in 5 subjects) or
  • Approved PreApprenticeship or
  • 3 years relevant industry experience

Current (in date) Passport: as there may be the opportunity to work abroad

Colour vision test may be required (SOLAS requirement)
