Job Summary

This role will help define design build and maintain software solutions which advance developer effectiveness at Toast and provide a world-class experience to engineers across the business.
Are you ready for a change
Toast is looking for a staff software engineer to join the Cash & Close and Shift Review team in India. Youll play a key role in building the products and platform that help restaurants reconcile sales manage cash-handling workflows review shift performance and gain operational insights across Toasts ecosystem.
About this roll* (Responsibilities)
- Design build deploy and maintain highly resilient and scalable solutions across Android applications and backend services.
- Lead complex projects that improve functionality reliability and operational efficiency for our customers.
- Drive end-to-end technical solutions spanning Android clients APIs and backend systems.
- Partner with a wide array of teams across Toast to deliver impactful customer experiences.
- Contribute to the overall quality performance and reliability of Android and backend systems.
- Ensure quality through automated testing code reviews and operational excellence practices.
- Roll* features out to customers including monitoring production health and measuring success.
- Collaborate with UX and PM on the definition design and delivery of features.
- Mentor and coach engineers while influencing technical direction and driving engineering excellence across the team.
Do you have the right ingredients* (Requirements)
- Minimum Bachelors degree required.
- 10 years of experience developing and maintaining Android applications.
- Experience designing building and operating backend services and APIs at scale.
- Extensive experience with object-oriented programming languages such as Java or Kotlin with a deep understanding of testing quality and engineering best practices.
- Experience working with distributed systems microservices and cloud-based architectures.
- Experience leading technical design and delivering complex projects across multiple teams.
- Experience shipping production software and balancing delivery velocity with platform stability reliability and maintainability.
- Strong understanding of system design API design and data modeling.
- Focused on delivering positive impact for Toast customers.
- Enjoys working in a collaborative team environment with a shared codebase.
- Excellent cross-team communication and technical leadership skills.

Our Tech Stack
Toasts products run on a stack that ranges from guest and restaurant-facing Android tablets to backend services in Java to internal guest-facing and restaurant-facing web apps. Our backend services follow a microservice architecture written using Java 8 and DropWizard; we use AWS extensively ranging from S3 to RDS to Lambda. We have our own platform for dealing with user management service elevations and robust load balancing. Toast stores data in a set of sharded Postgres databases and utilises Apache Spark for large-scale data workloads including query and batch processing. The front-end is built primarily using React and ES6. The main Toast POS application is an Android application written in Java and Kotlin. For data between tablets and our cloud platform we operate RabbitMQ clusters as well as direct tablet communication to the back end.
