Role: Senior Backend Engineer (Java/Python) Toolchain & Knowledge Graph

The Opportunity

Join our global high-performing engineering team as a Backend Engineer. You will be at the heart of the Process-Tools organization driving the evolution of our new central engineering toolchain. This role is crucial for our Elefanto team where you will build the data backbone that connects disparate tools like Jira Codebeamer and Splunk into a unified intelligent system.

Operating within a framework inspired by SFIA you will not just execute tasks but take full ownership of your solutions from concept to delivery. You will collaborate daily with our development team in Germany and key stakeholders across the business contributing to a culture of technical excellence and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

As a key member of our team you will be entrusted with significant autonomy and responsibility. Your contributions will directly influence the efficiency and capabilities of our engineering processes.

  • Architect and Develop Backend Solutions: Design build and maintain robust scalable backend services using Java and Python to power our Elefanto knowledge graph platform and enhance integrations with tools like Jira Codebeamer and Splunk.
  • Drive Data Integration & Streaming: Engineer high-performance data pipelines using Apache Kafka. Implement and optimize producers and consumers to ensure reliable real-time data flow that underpins our entire tool ecosystem.
  • Master Semantic Web Technologies: Utilize your expertise in SPARQL GraphQL and RML to create sophisticated data models mappings and APIs. You will be responsible for transforming data from various sources into our central tool-agnostic ontology.
  • Foster Global Collaboration & Agile Excellence: Partner closely with our development team in Germany and stakeholders like Process Architects to define requirements design innovative features and ensure solutions meet concrete business needs.
  • Champion Code Quality and Ownership: Uphold the highest standards by actively participating in peer code reviews and taking end-to-end responsibility for the quality maintenance and support of your code.

Core Qualifications (Your Must-Have Skills)

  • Educational Foundation: A Bachelors degree in Computer Science Software Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Proven Backend Experience: 3 years of professional experience in designing and developing complex backend applications with a strong portfolio in Java. Proficiency in Python for backend development is also required.
  • Data Streaming Expertise: Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka or a similar message bus with a solid understanding of event-driven architecture.
  • Familiarity with Semantic Technologies: Demonstrable experience or strong theoretical knowledge of Knowledge Graphs and related technologies (SPARQL GraphQL RML).
  • Problem-Solving Mindset: A strong sense of ownership and the ability to independently troubleshoot complex technical challenges and deliver reliable solutions.
  • Team & Communication Skills: Excellent English communication skills and a proven ability to thrive in a collaborative agile and globally distributed team environment.

Preferred Qualifications (Your Bonus Skills)

  • Tool Architecture Knowledge: Deep understanding of the APIs and architectures of tools like Jira Codebeamer or IBM ETM.
  • AI & Prompt Engineering: Experience or a keen interest in Large Language Models (LLMs) prompt engineering and agentic workflows is a significant plus.
