Job Summary
We are looking for a detail-oriented technically skilled Rack Lifecycle Tech to join our Rack Lifecycle Team within AWS Infrastructure this individual contributor role you will be a hands-on executor responsible for the physical installation cabling handoff and decommissioning of racks across your assigned data center site. You are the person on the floor who turns capacity plans into operational reality.
As a Rack Lifecycle Tech you will execute structured cabling rack installation and decommission activities with precision and to standard following established SOPs escalating deviations to your team lead and ensuring every rack you touch is installed correctly cabled to specification fully documented and handed off with zero blockers. This is an individual contributor role with no people management responsibilities.
Your work is foundational to AWSs ability to deliver infrastructure capacity to customers reliably safely and at the lowest possible cost.
Key job responsibilities
Rack Installation & Cabling
Execute rack installations including physical placement power connections grounding and cable management per AWS standards and MOPs
Perform structured cabling including fiber/copper terminations patch panel connections labeling and dressing to specification
Complete OTDR and power testing; validate results against acceptance thresholds; escalate failures to team lead promptly rather than self-resolving outside approved procedures
Follow all EHS protocols lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and safe work practices during installation activities
Rack Lifecycle Operations
Execute work orders and tasks assigned by the Rack Lifecycle Team Manager under direct manager direction maintaining accurate status updates in workflow management tools (e.g. Boost MARS)
Perform quality checks on completed cabling work including port map verification label accuracy and as-built documentation updates in CMDB/DCIM
Identify and escalate issues blockers or deviations from SOPs encountered during task execution to the team lead or manager promptly; do not self-resolve outside approved procedures
Support deployment wave readiness by participating in pre-work site walks material staging and tool preparation
Material Handling & Supply Chain Support
Receive verify and stage incoming rack cable optics and hardware deliveries; validate against BOM and flag discrepancies
Maintain accurate site inventory records for cables optics patch cords and consumables used during deployments
Support cycle count activities and assist in identifying inventory shortfalls that may impact deployment timelines
Handover & Documentation
Complete all required as-built documentation port maps test result records and workflow sign-offs before handoff to Data Center Operations
Update CMDB/DCIM and IPAM records accurately following rack installation or decommission activities
Ensure handoffs are clean and fully documented with zero open blockers enabling smooth transition to the next lifecycle phase
Rack Decommissioning
Execute physical decommission activities per assigned MOPs including cable removal power disconnects asset de-tagging and rack extraction
Perform device wipe and media destruction in compliance with AWS Secure Media Destruction and EHS policies
Sort label and stage recovered assets (optics cables PDUs hardware) for RMA redeployment or secure disposal per AWS Reverse Logistics policy
Update DCIM/CMDB IPAM and port maps post-decom to ensure accurate space power and circuit records
Validate that reclaimed U-space power and cooling capacity is accurately recorded in the available pool
Quality Safety & Compliance
Adhere to all site-level SOPs quality standards and governance frameworks for cabling installation and decommission activities
Complete all required safety training and certifications; participate in regular EHS audits and team safety briefings
Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying recurring quality issues suggesting process improvements and sharing feedback with the Rack Lifecycle Team Manager
Use Rack Lifecycle Team tooling (e.g. Boost MARS ALM/DCLM) accurately to record work track assets and maintain data integrity
Cross-Team Coordination
Support coordination with DCO DCEO Network Engineering and facilities teams during active deployment or decom activities under manager guidance to ensure smooth execution
Participate in daily stand-ups and pre-work briefings; communicate clearly on task status blockers and schedule adherence
Provide accurate timely updates on task completion and flag risks or delays to the team lead immediately
Continuous Learning & Development
Maintain and develop technical proficiency in structured cabling fiber optics rack installation and data center physical infrastructure
Complete required certifications and training modules including EHS LOTO and any Rack Lifecycle Team-specific technical programs
Proactively seek feedback from leads and managers to improve personal performance and output quality
Support the onboarding and training of new team members; share knowledge and best practices with peers to build overall team capability and quality standards
Stay current on AWS infrastructure tooling cabling standards and process updates communicated by the Rack Lifecycle Team
A day in the life
As a Rack Lifecycle Tech your day is on the data center floor. You might start the morning by reviewing your assigned work orders in Boost checking in with your team lead on priorities and staging cables and optics for a rack installation wave. By midday you could be terminating fiber runs at a patch panel running OTDR tests to validate loss results against acceptance thresholds or labeling and dressing a freshly installed the afternoon you might be updating CMDB records for completed work orders de-tagging and staging recovered assets from an EOL decom or helping onboard a new technician by walking them through the SOP. If you encounter a deviation from the approved MOP you escalate it to your team lead immediately you dont improvise. Your role is hands-on technical and precise you execute the work that keeps AWS capacity on track.

- 2 years of in data center or critical environment in Computer Hardware Repair Infrastructure Cabling Network Deployment or Data Center Operations experience or experience working in a data center environment (racking and stacking gear cable management hot/cold aisle containment)
- 2 years of computer hardware experience including troubleshooting and repairing experience
- 2 years of Computer Hardware Repair Infrastructure Cabling Network Deployment or Data Center Operations experience
- 1 years of network cabling fiber optics and test equipment including VFL power meter and OTDR experience
- 4 years of relevant work in a data center or other critical environment or 4 years of data center engineering or operations experience
- Experience establishing metrics for measurement of engineering and operational excellence
- Familiarity with rack decommissioning including device wipe media destruction and asset recovery procedures
