BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT
The WFP Guatemala Country Office is implementing its Country Strategic Plan (CSP) which prioritizes resilient food systems strengthening and climate change adaptation. As part of these efforts WFP is expanding its focus on market access entrepreneurship and climate-smart agriculture to support smallholder farmers and vulnerable communities in building sustainable livelihoods.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Conduct an analysis of the cooperative landscape in Guatemala including governance structures operational models and alignment with food security and nutrition objectives in areas of WFP intervention.
2. Map key market access actors entry points and value chain linkages relevant to WFP-supported smallholder farmers and cooperatives with a focus on priority geographic areas.
3. Support the development and refinement of tools and methodologies for cooperative and market access assessments ensuring alignment with WFP corporate approaches and country context.
4. Assist in the roll-out and testing of these assessment tools in selected field locations including data collection validation and preliminary analysis.
5. Contribute to the generation of evidence and analytical products to inform programme design related to resilient and inclusive food systems including smallholder market integration and local procurement.
6. Support analysis of constraints and opportunities affecting smallholder participation in structured markets including access to finance aggregation logistics and quality standards.
7. Provide inputs to programme documents concept notes and donor reports related to resilient food systems market access and livelihoods.
8. Collaborate with relevant units (Programme Supply Chain Partnerships) to ensure coherence between market access interventions and broader resilience-building strategies.
9. Support knowledge management and documentation of lessons learned good practices and case studies from ongoing initiatives.
10. Perform other duties as required to support the resilience and food systems portfolio as requested by supervisor.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT
Cooperative Landscape Analysis Report: A detailed report mapping the cooperative ecosystem in Guatemala including governance structures operational models and their relevance to food security and nutrition objectives in WFP priority areas.
Market Access and Value Chain Mapping Report: A structured analysis identifying key market actors entry points aggregation mechanisms and value chain linkages for WFP-supported smallholder farmers and cooperatives in targeted geographic zones.
Assessment Tools and Methodology Package: A set of refined tools templates and guidance notes for cooperative and market access assessments aligned with WFP corporate approaches and adapted to the Guatemala context.
Constraints and Opportunities Analysis for Smallholder Market Participation: A targeted analysis identifying key barriers and enabling factors (finance logistics aggregation standards etc.) affecting smallholder integration into structured markets with actionable recommendations.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education
Masters and PhD students or graduates researchers or professors from the JOHNS HOPKINS SCHOOL OF ADVANCED INTERNATIONAL STUDIES.
Experience
Advanced academic knowledge or technical experience in Political Sciences International Studies International Relations or Social Studies.
Teamwork Professional Integrity Strategic Thinking Partnership Management Results- Oriented Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Drives results and delivers on commitments
Knowledge & Skills
Languages
Fluency in Spanish (Level B2) and in English (Level C). Intermediate knowledge of any other official UN language (French Spanish Arabic Chinese Russian or Portuguese) is an asset.
