BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The WPF Innovation Accelerator Communication team enables WFP to turn innovation into influence and action. By amplifying the stories of Country Offices implementing new solutions communication ensures that local successes are visible to global audiences and can be replicated elsewhere. For Country Offices the communications team provides toolkits and clear narratives that help them articulate impact; for donors and partners it delivers credible evidence and compelling calls to co-invest and scale; and for innovators it makes WFP programmes accessible with clear doing so communications strengthens WFPs position as the partner of choice for humanitarian innovation.

The Communications Volunteer will report to Communications Consultant Sanjna Sudan under the Head of Marketing and Communications and work in close coordination with the WFP Innovation Accelerator communications team to amplify the work of the WFP Innovation Accelerator internally and externally.

DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Communications Support for the WFP Innovation Accelerator

  • Support communications tasks across Innovation Accelerator teams through drafting editing and preparing written materials in close coordination with the Communications & Knowledge Management team.

  • Contribute to communication materials for specific audiences across digital and traditional channels ensuring content remains accurate and up to date.

  • Assist in drafting articles and blogs that help position the WFP Innovation Accelerator as a leader in the humanitarian innovation space.

  • Provide writing and copyediting support in line with WFP and Innovation Accelerator Editorial Style Guides (e.g. talking points key messages newsletters website copy social media posts blog content).

  • Support outreach activities to attract highpotential social innovations from within WFP and external networks including assistance with events PR and digital marketing.

  • Monitor and report on communications performance using tools such as Google Analytics Buffer Mailchimp LinkedIn X YouTube and others.

  • Support content creation for innovation projects participating in Innovation Accelerator programmes.

  • Assist with content gathering for the development and maintenance of Innovation Accelerator portfolio pages on the WFP website.

  • Provide basic communications guidance to innovation project teams and help prepare communication materials as needed.

2. Partnerships Media Events & General Support

  • Contribute to communication materials aligned with priority content themes for a range of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Assist in producing visual and written content including website updates social media assets blog posts graphics audio/video materials and presentations.

  • Support fundraising and external engagement activities including preparation for events and partner interactions.

  • Support core Accelerator processes such as innovation challenges bootcamps the Sprint Programme and thoughtleadership initiatives.

  • Conduct research and background preparation to support Innovation Accelerator teams and leadership including interview preparation and desk research.

  • Draft story pitches for international media outlets to help secure coverage of the Innovation Accelerator and its innovation projects.

  • Monitor and coordinate media requests and liaise with relevant internal teams to facilitate responses.

  • Track and report media coverage related to the Innovation Accelerator and associated innovation projects.

  • Provide general support to the Head of the WFP Innovation Accelerator and the Director of Innovation & Knowledge Management including any additional tasks required to advance team priorities.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

  • Supported communication activities are effectively planned and delivered.

  • Supported communications activities are documented for WFP Innovation Accelerator team.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education: The candidate should have an undergraduate degree.

Experience: Experience in communications reporting marketing and/or business-related positions. Experience in innovation is beneficial.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Background in communications or related fields ideally with exposure to international or multicultural environments.

  • Interest in digital analytics and willingness to learn how to track and interpret marketing and communications metrics.

  • Ability to think conceptually and contribute ideas to communication strategies and project coordination.

  • Familiarity with innovation approaches such as lean startup or humancentred design or a strong interest in developing these skills with a growth mindset.

  • Writing and editing skills with the ability to produce clear highquality written materials and presentations.

  • Comfort engaging with diverse stakeholders with professionalism maturity and tact.

  • Collaborative working style and ability to liaise effectively across cultures teams and levels of seniority.

  • Good timemanagement skills including the ability to prioritise tasks anticipate needs and work to deadlines.

  • Selfmotivated and proactive approach with the ability to work independently when needed.

  • Comfort with hybrid and digital collaboration tools and modern ways of working (inperson virtual and hybrid).

  • Basic understanding of visual design and content creation including tools such as Canva LinkedIn X YouTube or Medium (an asset).

  • Basic knowledge of digital tools such as Google Suite Slack and other contemporary platforms.

  • Commitment to highquality work and to contributing to impactful outcomes for the people WFP serves.

  • Strong alignment with WFPs mission and motivation to support the goals of the UN World Food Programme.

Languages: Fluency (level C) in written and spoken English.
