Your Impact

The Facilities Technician (Germany) is a hands-on operationally focused role responsible for the day-to-day maintenance upkeep and safe operation of company premises in addition to core facilities duties the post-holder will provide essential on-site support for Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) compliance activities acting as the local point of contact for EHS matters under the direction of the Sr. Facilities EHS Manager.

This role is critical in ensuring that German facilities operate efficiently safely and in full compliance with German and EU legal requirements including the organisations ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified management systems. The post-holder will be a reliable and proactive member of the wider international Facilities and EHS team.

What Youll Do

Facilities Maintenance & Operations

  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance tasks across German premises including mechanical electrical plumbing and general building systems.
  • Perform regular site inspections and walkthroughs to identify defects hazards or maintenance requirements; log findings and take corrective action promptly.
  • Manage relationships with local contractors tradespeople and service providers; supervise on-site contractor activities in accordance with the permit-to-work system.
  • Coordinate and oversee the servicing and statutory inspection of building plant and equipment (e.g. HVAC fire systems electrical installations lifts) in compliance with DGUV and BetrSichV requirements.
  • Manage the receipt storage and distribution of facilities consumables spare parts and maintenance materials.
  • Support space planning internal moves and minor refurbishment projects; assist in coordinating fit-out works as required.
  • Monitor and report on utilities (electricity gas water) and raise alerts for abnormal consumption.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities contractor visits and statutory inspections using the facilities management system.
  • Ensure all communal areas welfare facilities and operational spaces are clean well-maintained and presentable at all times.

Environmental Health & Safety On-Site Support

  • Act as the local EHS contact for the German site(s) providing first-line support to employees and managers on day-to-day EHS queries.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management System at site level.
  • Conduct routine EHS inspections housekeeping checks and workplace assessments; record findings and escalate issues to the EHS Manager as appropriate.
  • Support the preparation and review of site-specific risk assessments (Gefährdungsbeurteilungen) in accordance with the ArbSchG (Arbeitsschutzgesetz) and DGUV regulations.
  • Assist with the investigation of accidents incidents and near misses; complete initial incident reports and preserve evidence for formal investigation.
  • Coordinate and support the delivery of EHS toolbox talks induction training and awareness activities for site-based employees.
  • Monitor compliance with waste management obligations under the Kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz (KrWG) including correct segregation labelling and disposal of waste streams.
  • Support environmental monitoring activities including waste tonnage recording energy data collection and reporting against site targets.
  • Maintain and inspect site first aid equipment fire extinguishers emergency exits and evacuation routes; conduct regular fire drills in coordination with the EHS Manager.
  • Liaise with the Sicherheitsbeauftragter (safety representative) and Betriebsrat (works council) as required ensuring open communication on safety matters.

Compliance & Legal Obligations

  • Ensure site operations comply with relevant German legislation including the ArbSchG ArbStättV (Workplace Ordinance) BetrSichV (Industrial Safety Ordinance) GefStoffV (Hazardous Substances Ordinance) and applicable DGUV rules.
  • Maintain and update the site legal compliance register in conjunction with the EHS Manager; flag any changes in legislation that may affect site operations.
  • Ensure all mandatory signage safety notices and emergency information are displayed correctly and in German (and English where required).
  • Support the preparation of documentation required for regulatory inspections by the Gewerbeaufsichtsamt (Trade Supervisory Office) or Berufsgenossenschaft (occupational accident insurance institution).
  • Manage hazardous substances in accordance with GefStoffV; maintain the site REACH/SDS register and ensure safe storage and handling procedures are followed.

ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 Site-Level Activities

  • Support the delivery of site-level objectives and targets aligned to the organisations ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
  • Assist in the preparation for and hosting of internal and external audits at the German site; act as a local guide and point of contact for auditors.
  • Maintain site-level EHS documentation records and evidence files required by the management systems (e.g. inspection checklists training records maintenance logs).
  • Participate in management system reviews and contribute to the identification of improvement opportunities at site level.
  • Raise non-conformances near-miss reports and improvement suggestions through the organisations corrective action tracking system.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Work closely with the UK-based Sr. Facilities EHS Manager providing regular updates on site status maintenance activities and EHS performance.
  • Communicate effectively with site employees building management and local authorities in German; provide translation support for EHS documentation as required.
  • Attend team meetings EHS reviews and facilities briefings (in person or virtually) as scheduled.
  • Support colleagues at other European sites on a task basis when required including occasional travel.

What You Bring

Essential Qualifications & Training

  • Completed vocational training (Berufsausbildung) in a relevant trade or technical discipline (e.g. electrical engineering HVAC building services mechatronics) Gesellenbrief or equivalent.
  • Valid first aid certificate (Ersthelfer) or willingness to obtain upon appointment.
  • Certificate of competence or training in relevant DGUV regulations applicable to the role (e.g. DGUV Vorschrift 3 for electrical safety).
  • Full German driving licence (Klasse B).

Essential Experience

  • Minimum 3 years experience in a facilities maintenance building services or technical services role ideally within a commercial or industrial environment.
  • Practical experience of carrying out and documenting risk assessments and workplace inspections in compliance with German H&S law.
  • Experience managing contractors on site including issuing permits to work and supervising third-party maintenance activities.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of German workplace safety regulations and DGUV standards.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong practical and technical problem-solving skills; able to diagnose faults and implement effective solutions.
  • Good understanding of German EHS legislation and a commitment to maintaining a safe and compliant workplace.
  • Fluent German (written and spoken); working proficiency in English to liaise with the UK management team and read English-language EHS documentation.
  • Organised and methodical approach to record-keeping maintenance scheduling and compliance documentation.
  • Reliable self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy while keeping the management team informed.
  • Good interpersonal skills; approachable and effective in communicating safety matters to colleagues at all levels.
  • Competent IT user: Microsoft Office (Outlook Word Excel); comfortable using digital maintenance and EHS reporting systems.
