The opportunity

We are looking for a passionate and proficient industrial scientist with expertise in Power System Analysis and Optimization Algorithms at our Research Center in Mannheim/ an inter-disciplinary environment you will drive cutting-edge innovation for different complex systems in power grid applications and generate technologies for future solutions.

How youll make an impact

  • You take initiative: Collaborate with a global and inter-disciplinary team of researchers in Hitachi Energy Research to drive the development from concept to robust MVP and partner with product/software teams to bring solutions to production

  • You investigate: Translate real power system problems into rigorous models and design computational experiments to quantify accuracy and robustness; ensure reproducibility with versioned code and data

  • You collaborate: Build relationships within the company and actively share your knowledge and expertise. Interact with local and global external partners including universities start-ups and vendors to integrate diverse perspectives and stakeholder inputs

  • You communicate: Disseminate your results in scientific publications patent applications and technical reports. Produce clear design docs and notebooks that enable reuse

Your background

  • PhD in Electrical/Power Systems Engineering Automation Computer Science Mathematics or Masters degree with equivalent industrial experience

  • Proven expertise in modelling and steady-state analyses of power systems (EMS and GMS applications like power flow unit commitment congestion management state estimation etc.). Knowledge of short and long-term energy and ancillary service markets would be a plus

  • Knowledge in mathematical optimization applied to power systems and modern optimization techniques is strongly desired experience with machine learning and/or artificial intelligence technologies is a plus

  • Proven experience in software development using programming languages Python Matlab or C/C and openness to learn additional languages

  • Experience with state-of-the-art software engineering techniques (version control testing AI tools for software development) and integrating solution algorithms into applications are beneficial. High-performance computing skills such as parallel/distributed and/or GPU computing are an advantage

  • Excellent communication skills in English team player attitude motivation to learn initiative and creativity. German language skills or willingness to acquire them is desired
