PhD (mfd) position in Asteroseismology

The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural mathematical and computer sciences. Major research directions at HITS include complex simulations across scales data science and analysis and enabling software and tools. Application areas range from molecules to stars and from words to weather.

An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.

The Theory and Observations of Stars (TOS) group at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies invites applications for a PhD position.

Within the TOS group we are interested in understanding the physical processes that determine the structure and evolution of stars using asteroseismology the study of the internal structures of stars through their global oscillations. The focus is on solar-like oscillators i.e. low-mass main-sequence stars subgiants and red-giant stars that possess oscillations similar to those present in the Sun.

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the TOS group.

The project is broadly defined to investigate the physical processes at play in the internal structures of red-giant stars with a specific focus on magnetic fields in these stars. This project involves the analysis of both observational data as well as synthetic stellar models to understand the underlying structure of stars.

Candidates for admission for the PhD program should have a MSc degree or equivalent in physics astrophysics or a related discipline.
