Mechanical Design Engineer (mfd)

Sphaira is a pioneering deep-tech startup from Berlin specialising in the fusion of autonomous mobility and cutting-edge healthcare. Were building the infrastructure layer for intramobility enabling everything and everyone to move autonomously within indoor environments like hospitals.

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team. You will be responsible for the design certification and documentation and manufacturing of our first product before moving on to creating a revolutionary indoor vehicle. This role calls for a creative problem solver with a strong understanding of mechanical systems materials and manufacturing processes.

Tasks

• Design & Development: Create detailed mechanical designs and 3D CAD models for wheelchair components including frames mechanisms and accessories with a focus on functionality durability and aesthetics.
• Prototyping & Testing: Develop and test prototypes to validate designs ensuring they meet performance safety and compliance standards. Incorporate iterative feedback into design improvements.
• Material Selection: Research and select materials for components balancing factors such as cost strength weight sustainability and manufacturing feasibility.
• Design Modifications: Independently implement design modifications and adaptations to meet evolving requirements or resolve technical challenges.
• Documentation: Prepare precise engineering drawings specifications and technical documentation ensuring full compliance with relevant regulatory and quality standards.
• Supplier Collaboration: Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure designs are manufacturable cost-effective and meet quality expectations.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with stakeholders including design engineering and product teams to integrate innovative features and continuous improvements into the product.

Requirements

• Bachelors or Masters degree in mechanical engineering automotive engineering or comparable
• Previous experience in mechanical design preferably in the healthcare mobility or consumer products industries
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software namely Fusion 360
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes (e.g. welding injection molding CNC machining)
• Experience in G-suite Jira and confluence is an advantage
• You are characterised by an independent and self-responsible way of working flexibility and the ability to work in a team
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Hands-on experience with workshop equipment and testing tools

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in the medical device industry.
• Experience with surfacing and complex shape development.
• Understanding of regulatory standards and certification processes for medical devices.
• Knowledge of additional programming languages (e.g. Python VHDL).
• Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and testing tools.
