Description

Global emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are among the biggest challenges for human and animal health.

The Genomic Epidemiology research group at DTU National Food Institute has as the primary task to conduct targeted research with the aim of predicting and preventing infectious diseases in humans and animals and supporting global detection surveillance and control with a specific focus on AMR. The research group combines expertise in conventional and molecular microbiology with epidemiology and bioinformatics. For this the Group is engaged in several projects analyzing the genomics of single mainly bacterial isolates and metagenomes.

The group has also developed online metagenomics and WGS tools for bacterial genome analysis which are accessed by users around the world. The group has full access to Computerome (Danish National Supercomputer for Life Sciences). In addition the group ensures availability of intellectual expertise and technology to execute the project including all facilities for molecular biology experiments bioinformatics facilities and expertise in whole genome sequencing metagenomics and machine learning.

The Research Group for Genomic Epidemiology seeks a candidate for a vacant Research Assistant position focused on the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance in livestock and associated risks to human health including how these risks are influenced by antimicrobial use in livestock production. The results generated in the project will be integrated into an existing model designed to predict how antimicrobial resistance may change under potential future changes in the regulation of antimicrobials in livestock production.

Responsibilities and qualifications

  • Conducting quantitative epidemiological analyses of existing data on the resistome in Danish pig farms with a focus on how the resistome is influenced by antimicrobial usage at farm level.
  • Contributing to the development of methods for classifying antimicrobial resistance genes in relation to human health risk based on resistance type genetic mobility and other relevant characteristics. This work will support the translation of epidemiological findings into assessments of human health risk.
  • Supporting the integration of analytical results into an existing decision support tool that predicts changes in the resistome following changes in antimicrobial usage in livestock.
  • Communicating results to national stakeholders; therefore a moderate level of proficiency in Danish is required
  • Supporting an ongoing EU research project on the risk of spread of antimicrobial resistance and associated genes in pathogens.

As a formal qualification you must have atwo-year masters degree in engineering or equivalent preferably with a background in quantitative data analysis within epidemiology microbiology bioinformatics veterinary public health or a related field. Experience with quantitative epidemiological analysis programming (Python or R) data management and statistical computing is an advantage.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2 years. Starting date will be 1 September or according to mutual agreement.
