The SMB Group is a highly successful FE college formed through the merger of Stephenson College and Brooksby Melton College. We are an innovative and highly responsive centre for education and training with campuses in Coalville Melton Mowbray and Brooksby.

We are looking for an Engineer with knowledge skills and experience in the engineering sector with the ability to support our staff and students in the provision in a workshop environment. The opportunity also enables positive opportunities to support the next generation of engineering students whilst being a key figure in developing our provision along with staff.

We would also like to invite interested parties with skills and knowledge of the sector who want to make a difference. You may currently be working in an engineering environment or been on the front line of various areas in the sector such as manufacturing machining design welding etc. looking for a change of direction. You will need a passion for innovation confident in bringing new ideas to the SMB group and the enthusiasm in embedding new technologies into the learning environment.

Working as part of the engineering team you will be responsible for running the workshops ordering stock and supporting teaching and learning with a lecturer. You will possess an excellent knowledge for the sector with experience to support the needs of the section and a desire to influence our new and upskilling engineering students.

As well as your relevant experience and current knowledge you will also be willing to obtain a relevant teaching qualification (DTLLS PGCE or equivalent) if you do not already possess one.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Engineering Workshop Supervisor

Grade: GS05

Responsible to: Section Manager

Responsible for: Supporting in a workshop capacity

Date of Job Description: September 2023

Purpose of Job:

To support or take a lead role (As guided by the section head) the delivery of teaching and learning within the workshop environment ensuring that resources supplies tools and equipment are effectively and safely managed and maintained.

To lead by example within the workshop environment setting high expectations and maintaining high standards.

To be responsible for the purchasing of workshop related resources and consumables maintaining high value for money working with the section head to manage budget spend.

To ensure that health and safety is maintained at all times in the workshops and stores in accordance with Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and any Health and safety Regulations issued under the Act.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the Health and Safety of students in the use of equipment tools and resources required to develop their skills and knowledge.

  • Review monitor and complete annual risk assessments associated with the workshop environment including COSHH.

  • Organise safe systems for storage of material and equipment.

  • Ensure that workshop and ancillary areas including the service yard and hygiene facilities are kept secure clean and in a fit and safe condition of use.

  • Maintain and keep up to date inventory and records of equipment and materials.

  • Monitor and maintain stock levels and order replacements as and when required.

  • Ensure that any materials or equipment are disposed of safely and in accordance with College procedures statutory regulation or manufacturers guidelines.

  • To be responsible for the effective ordering of department resources and consumables effectively manage any budgets that may be delegated from time to time by the section head ensuring that best value is obtained and that Financial Regulations are complied with.

  • Prepare check and maintain the operation of equipment and machinery carrying out routine maintenance repairs or replacement as necessary and ensure that appropriate servicing is completed in accordance with maintenance schedules.

  • Issue and record tools equipment and materials to staff and students as required.

  • Ensure the safe storage and issue of flammable and health injurious liquids

  • Assist in the development of the workshop to ensure continuous improvement in practical training

  • Receive and check all incoming equipment and materials

  • Assemble set out check and dismantle equipment tools materials and vehicles

  • Design manufacture and construct equipment for use in the teaching/training programmes of the department

  • Contribute to the production of teaching and learning materials and resources in the workshop environment

  • Assist and lead in the delivery of practical training and give demonstrations in the use of equipment tools materials and repair and testing techniques as appropriate.

  • Assist in the preparation and organisation of formative and summative workshop assessments including technical support advice and guidance.

  • Support the EPA process as required support awarding body assessors during the EPA session.

  • Support teaching teams overseeing the quality of students work and provide feedback to develop students confidence and resilience within the workshop environment.

  • Supervise and assist students as appropriate providing students with support and guidance including during induction under the instruction and guidance of a tutor.

  • In the event of absent staff lead by example the planned workshop sessions as guided by the section head in order to maintain high student learning experience.

  • Notify the Section Head of any building maintenance requirements

General Responsibilities

  • Cooperate with the College in so far as is necessary to enable it to comply with its duties under relevant Health and Safety legislation
  • Keep abreast of developments in their own area of expertise and undertake professional development opportunities where identified and approved subject to funding to ensure continued effective performance in the role
  • Undertake their duties in accordance with the Colleges Equality and Diversity Policy behaving ethically and with transparency
  • Abide by the Corporations policy on the confidentiality of data stored electronically and by other means in line with the Data Protection Act and General Data Protection Regulations.

Other Reasonable Duties

This Job Description sets out the main duties of the post at the date when it was drawn up. Requirements

Qualified to Level 2 Maths and English or equivalent or be able to demonstrate competence at this level though diagnostic testing

Qualified to Level 3 or equivalent in a relevant subject area

Qualified to Level 4 or equivalent in a relevant subject

Qualified to level 3 teacher training or be willing to obtain this

A1 Assessor Award or be willing to obtain this

V1 verifier Award or be willing to obtain this
