TITLE: MIDDLE SCHOOL/HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER

REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL

Primary Purpose:

Science teachers help middle and high school learners understand scientific phenomena. They create engaging lessons explain complex concepts simply and enrich classroom time by using experiments. Science Teachers encourage students to be curious and to have respect for the natural world.

Responsibilities:

• Designing developing and delivering quality lesson plans and curricula that adhere to national and school guidelines.
• Drawing up suitable assessments and delivering helpful feedback to students parents and other teachers.
• Establishing classroom lab and field trip rules and regulations and ensuring that all students understand what is expected of them.
• Setting up demonstrations and assisting and supervising students while they conduct experiments.
• Providing extra resources support and interventions for students who are struggling.
• Ensuring all permission slips are signed in a timely manner and acting as a field trip chaperone when required.
• Grading papers updating records and handling various administrative tasks.
• Creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and voicing concerns.
• Participating in other school activities and regularly communicating with parents.
• Teach Science to groups of students of all abilities across years 6 12.
• Ensure that all lessons are planned with clear aims and objectives.
• Ensure that all lessons are delivered in line with the departmental schemes of work and school policies.
• Take into account the differing ability lessons of students and differentiate work accordingly.
• Encourage all students to be actively engaged in their own learning and in reviewing their progress against targets.
• Ensure that all students are known by name and that the classroom atmosphere is positive at all times.
• Encourage and foster intellectual curiosity.
• Deal with inappropriate behavior quickly and effectively according to the school behavior policy.
• Check that all subject matter is effectively communicated and understood by all groups of students.
• Set appropriate tasks and challenges for homework according to the published timetable and ensure that it is regularly marked with constructive feedback.
• Keep careful records of student progress in line with departmental and school policy.
• Ensure that there is a high standard of display work in the laboratory which is changed frequently.
• Keep work areas tidy and organized to promote safety in the laboratory.
• Attend scheduled meetings in the Science Department and school.
• Ensure that all experiments are trialed beforehand and risk assessment is used with all experimental work.

Qualifications:

• Degree in science or a related discipline.
• A relevant teaching certificate or license.
• A completed apprenticeship or teaching experience.
• Practical experience with MS Office Google Classroom and other software.
• Dedication patience and the ability to remain calm in tense situations.
• Proficiency in English
• Excellent communication skills
• Customeroriented and cooltempered
